SMB Film Thread 2026

Dune part 2 (prime) - loved the book. Fell asleep the first time I watched part 1. Completely whelmed by this one as well. Visually impressive naturally but it just seems to get wrapped up very quickly despite taking its time overall. I’d have to go back and read the book but the shift in Paul’s attitude to accept his destiny seems very jarring here. 7/10

Cold Storage (2026)

A fungus lands back on earth from space and despite being locked away, escapes and kills everything it comes into contact with. Exploding people and exploding deer.

Not even Liam neeson can save the film. 3/10
Going to give this a watch tonight.
Cheers.

It just got too expensive for something you weren't fussed about seeing. I don't like being sat in a dark room surrounded by annoying people and unable to pause while I go for a wee.
I have a decent setup at home so sometimes the cinema feels a bit of a downgraded experience. The new cinema in Sunderland is spot on like

I Swear.

Interesting, funny and genuinely perception shifting.

9/10.
Just finished this and agree with what you say. Rare that a film can be enjoyed and be very educational at the same time. All the actors in the film did a great job, especially the lead. Great film.

Been a few decent ones on Netflix recently after months and months of dross.

I know a few people from Gala and Maxine Peakes accent is spot on (they’ll probably disagree like)

Jafar Panahi triple bill:

The Mirror (1997) 10/10
I think this is now my favourite Panahi film. A young girl tries to go home across Tehran after her mother fails to collect her from school. Half way through, the girl breaks character, has a strop, and says she doesn't want to be in the film anymore. For the remainder, the crew surreptitiously follow the 'real' girl as she completes the journey. Full movie here:

This Is Not a Film (2011) 9/10
Made by Panahi in his own apartment in Tehran when he was under house arrest. Who else could turn putting the rubbish out into a rousing finale?

The Circle (2000) 8/10
Opens with a prison-like window in a maternity hospital, ends with a prison-like window in a prison. The narrative is passed between several female protagonists, illustrating the plight of women in Iran. For once with Panahi, the message gets in the way of the film. Full movie here:

Mr Nobody Against Putin.
Watched this morning having found out this BBC feature length documentary had just won an Oscar.
All about of how the war has impacted on a small town Russian school. Camera man had to flee Russia to get the footage out.
Excellent.

Birth (2004) 9/10
Nicole Kidman as a widow suddenly visited by a 10-year-old boy claiming to be the reincarnation of her late husband. Slow and unsettling, and brilliantly directed by Jonathan Glazer.

Sexy Beast (200) 8/10
Earlier film by Glazer. Great script, well put together, but I think it's destablized by Ben Kingsley. It's such an incredible performance that it seems to suck the air out of the rest of the film.

The Madness of King George (1994) 8/10
Adpatation of Alan Bennett's play The Madness of George III which, infamously, has to be renamed because Americans would have presumed they'd missed the previous two films. All the luvvies doing their thing in a prestige historical drama.
