Roker near Sunderland

Pathetic really

As I said before Sunderland seems to be the only city where its actually boundaries shrink

Whereas Newcastle's boundaries increase from what they are actually

Local media play a massive part in this aswell. Hard to think there's not an agenda.

Another thing Newcastle's population has only just become larger than Sunderland's. Prior to the last census Sunderland was the largest city between Leeds and Edinburgh

But, it definitely was a town before 1964, there were the villages of Harraton, Fatfield, Glebe, The Village, Usworth, Pattinson Town ( which no longer exists) and a few others that made up the town of Washington.

Glebe? I dont think there are any houses over 50 years old in glebe
 
Not sure on this thread but just seen Royal Quays, North Shields is now, Newcastle Quays - how does that work? Mind you Dalton Park would love to call itself Newcastle Dalton Park. Royal Quays has a North Shields address. I laid into a business in Team Valley about using Newcastle as their location, caused a load of grief as person who I was meeting there had put Newcastle in sat nav and could not find it.

Royal Quays must only survive because of the ferry port, can't remember last person I know who went there. Nobody daft enough to pay the tunnel fee to go to a Greggs etc, would rather go to Silverlink.

Newcastle's boundaries increase outside its actual boundaries. Sunderland's decrease from its actual boundaries. Simple as that

You do realise that you're claiming Washington is a town because washington village annexed glebe, fatfield etc, but refuse to accept that washington is part of sunderland because it was, well, annexed by sunderland? I'm from Redhouse, Sunderland, you're from Washington, Sunderland.

I think that’s a bit of a stretch. The villages came together originally to create a town over a long period of time.
And I have no problem with Washington being part of the city of Sunderland, just saying it was already a town and has it’s own history and identity.

It wasn't, before 1964 it was called Washington Village. It was never a town before 1964.

And on a different note, I was just looking up the 10 oldest churches in England. Wikipedia mentions St Pauls, Jarrow, 681, home of the Venerable Bede. No mention of St Peters, Sunderland, 674, home and probable birth parish of the Venerable Bede.

I mean come on mate, you might be from Gateshead but haway. Just say where it really is, Seaham, County Durham. Some sites ask you to quote the nearest city but even that's wrong

I think it’s because it’s only the tower remaining
Bit more of St. Paul’s remaining
Was very disappointed that there was no recognition of 1350 years of St. Peter’s in 2024

I'd pop in occasionally back when Nike were there, and I was a daily commuter through the Tyne Tunnel. Might have popped in last just after lockdown as my old barber was still through there and I felt a bit daft heading through the Tunnel just for the barbers. It's desolate like, although they are apparently trying to rejuvenate it with local businesses. Just feels a bit out the way.
