Team v Port Vale?

Id play full strength
Full strength is already a very weakened side. Roefs, mukiele, hume, reinildo, sadiki, xhaka, traore and brobbey all out. Theres 8 of the starting 11 missing before we even get into the second string players like minded, cirkin, ta bi.
It’s telling that 14(?) years later we’re still moaning about this. Which is the exact reason we shouldn’t take a chance. If we get knocked out with full strength 11, we haven’t performed. If we get knocked out with a weakened team, we could have done things different & only have ourselves to blame.

Let’s not leave anything to chance.
Again, it’s going to be a second string side largely because we’ve no choice.

A test of our squad depths quality.
As was Leeds on Tuesday.

Tin hat on, and with all due respect to port vale.

If any of our players in the first team squad cannot be motivated and skilful enough to beat a team that’s struggling in league one, then they shouldn’t be in a premier league squad.

I know that football doesn’t always work like that - proof is when Crystal Palace were dumped out.

Plus port vale will be up for this and will raise their game. Fair play if they win and our players have put 100% into it. but we would need to ask serious questions - at the level of bouycoutts, leaflet campaigns, even egg throwing at an extreme.

Ellborg
09 Ballard Alderete
Angulo Rigg Xhaka Diarra Talbi
Isidor Mayenda

Lots of width from the wingbacks, and if we get it right we won’t be doing much defending. Those 3 in midfield should be able to dominate a bottom of L1 midfield.

We’re missing ten first team squad players with injuries or suspension so it’s necessarily a second string side but we should not further weaken it too much. Assuming Elborg will start.
I think I’d be tempted to go with wing backs. Talbi and Angulo both put in a shift so probably them. Geertruida, Ballard, O’Nien as the three.
Diarra, Rigg, Xhaka, Le Fee for first hour and assess who can go off. Up front I’d go Isidor, his pace should leave lower league defenders really struggling and a chance to get him back on scoresheet because he’s a different player when confident.
Christ knows for the bench!

Too many injuries to rest any defenders but would try Mayenda and Wison up top. Both need a bit play time and confidence boost.

Danger with Wilson like, as seems flat as fart, but arm round and tell him to go for it

Looked at first team squad and it’s currently 28 players but that includes Ba, Aleksic and Abdullhai. With ten out the bench will make interesting reading. Any kids we think would get a game in league one that aren’t already out on loan?

Who else is on yellows. I’d be tempted to bench them as we will have a tough QF.

Obvs bring on if needed
