SAFC and NUFC since the Saudi takeover

Major Major

Winger
The Saudi takeover of Newcastle United F.C. was completed 7 October 2021.
📊 League positions at the moment of takeover

⚫⚪ Newcastle United (Premier League)
19th place (relegation zone)

🔴⚪ Sunderland AFC (League One – 3rd tier)
4th place in League One around the same week

Approx transfer spend since Oct 2021 (taken from Transfermkt site)

Sunderland
~£150-170m
Newcastle
~£550-750m

Newcastle have spent roughly:
4 to 5 times more than Sunderland

So despite ;

- a starting position of 2 divisions above
- spending 4-5 times more money since then

Newcastle have less points and are currently below Sunderland in the Premier League with 9 games of the season left.

Frankly astonishing.

Ahh but you have missed the comparison of the “Trophy” hauls over this period

The Geordie Howaybians have won the EFL Cup - popularly known as The Mickey Mouse

Sunderland have won the EFL Trophy - popularly known as The Pizza Cup

Extra half billion to upgrade from Pizza Cup to Mickey Mouse Cup seems a bit extreme

But if we were to somehow finish above them this season….would heads roll?

Aye but…net spend.

Energy drink trophy.

FA Cup tie.

Etc.

yeah that's annoyed me a bit too. Newcastle and eddie howe were on the ropes before last night's game, and man utd had the chance to deal the knockout blow (they hate losing to man utd so would've been really sweet). There'd have been boo's and boycoutts and all sorts. But that win, and the manner of it, has got them all buzzing again and they're treating it akin to the carabao cup final win.

On the plus side, it does the usual of making eddie howe look great again so it keeps him there for a bit longer now.

But i've always had a soft spot for man utd, not after last night, that was f***ing spineless from them, so fuck em.
Also, i NEVER watch newcastle games, that was my first (not including the visitors game) last night in years. And i was amazed to see all the saudi advertising. I thought the mags were against all that in house advertising when ashley did it?

This has been referenced on here many, many times. As soon as the mags are on the ropes, they get the exact result they need to relieve some of the pressure. This has been the case since the day they were bought by the Saudi's. It's never going to change either, cos they've spent £750m and counting to ensure they never have proper truly dogshit form ever again. Yes they are under achieving in the league for the money they've spent, but they're never gonna do a Wolves are they?

Net transfer spend since Oct 2021
🔴⚪ Sunderland
Spent: about €188-212m
Received from sales: about €51-52m
Net spend: ≈ €-141m (~ £120m)
Transfermarkt

⚫⚪ Newcastle
Spent: about €652m
Sold: about €179.8m
Net spend: ≈ €-427m (~ £365m)
Transfermarkt
👉 Even with occasional big sales, Newcastle still massively outspend their income.

📊 Direct comparison
Club
Net spend since 2021
Sunderland
~£120m
Newcastle
~£365m
🧮 What that means
Newcastle’s net spend is roughly:
THREE TIMES Sunderland’s — even AFTER accounting for sales

Tbf i noticed it happening even before the saudi takeover. I always put it down to, and still often put it down to, they raise their game against the big teams, and very often when they're on sky/tnt. Like the players want to be put in the shop window.

More than that for the skunks.

It's more than both Man City and Liverpool.

They won the EFL Cup

We won the EFL Trophy

In the champions league the first time they finished rock bottom of their group - worst ever performance by an Oil Club in the ECL

🤞 this time they are about to be brayed by Barcelona
They're only in it this year because of a rule change in the middle of last season. In years gone by if a team qualified by winning a cup they took the place of the team who was the lowest qualifier. So 2 rule changes have let them in.

It's utterly ridiculous having 6 English teams in the Champions League.

I'm not at all convinced that watering down the Champions League is of any benefit to the teams who can now sneak in via the backdoor.

It earns you money, but then it also costs you money as you have to bolster your squad to compete. Plus you have to pay a load of bonuses - when Villa were in the CL something like 95% of their revenue went on wages.

And then you're stretched at key points of the season, meaning you struggle to compete domestically. All to be in a competition that you have precisely zero chance of winning.

The novelty quickly wears too. I had a look at the #nufc hashtag during the Carrier Bag 2nd leg and it was riddled with fans calling for Howe's head, calling for the players to be lynched etc. And that's as good as that tournament is going to get for them.

I’m still beating you in the not watching the 🦨💩 stakes. I never watch them and I didn’t watch them last night either! 😉😂
