SMB Film Thread 2026

renfield (ch4) enjoyably daft Dracula movie. Nicholas Hoult doing his best early Hugh grant impersonation, Nic cage being understated by his standards. 666/1000

I loved every minute. It's not for everyone, but there's got to be room in modern cinema for films willing to take risks with structure and genre. If the different timelines had been captioned, it might have solved some of the struggles viewers have with it. But having to work out the timelines for myself was one of things I appreciated about it.
 
28 years later - found it a bit dull & bland. Ralph Fiennes character the most interesting bit of the film by far.
 
Kill or Be Killed (1950)

Lawrence Tierney is accused of murder and hides out in a South American plantation.

A good guy role for LT without losing the harder edge of his usual style. The story itself is slow and quite dreary, though.

Sky Liner (1949)

A load of diplomatic documents are stolen and the sale is due to take place on a plane. On board are a load of random idiots and the law.

A mess. It could have been half decent, but none of the characters are developed, the logic is messy, there’s absurd narrative jumps, and the acting is a bit shit.

3/10 tops.
 
Rebuilding (2025) - 6.5/10 - Gentle drama about the aftermath of a wildfire on a cowboy and the local community. Nothing special and a little predictable but good acting and emotional at times.

Thought it was a very decent little film. You're right, the performances were excellent.
 
Colossal (2016) 7/10
Really weird take on the monster genre. Anne Hathaway as an alcoholic who discovers that if she goes into her childhood playground at a particular time of day her actions will correspond to a giant monster terrorising Seoul. It's a mess, but quite an interesting one.

Adam Driver as Paterson, an amateur poet/bus driver in Paterson, New Jersey. Excellent Jim Jarmusch film.

Centro do Brasil (Central Station) (1998) 10/10
A retired school teacher runs a scam writing letters for illiterate people people at Rio's Central Station. She gets caught up in the life of a 9-year-old boy, and ends up setting out on a road trip with him to find his father. Incredibly powerful.

I’ve had Central Station on dvd in my pile by the tv for over ten years. There’s always something else I’d rather watch.
 
The Cut.
Orlando Bloom as a retired boxer, gets another shot, but has to lose lots of weight to get into the ring.
A bit of a Jacob's Ladder vibe.
Intense.

Both excellent, one minor gripe was I did find Lost Horizon got a little dragging halfway through. It may well of being I was just tired, it's 2hrs 15mjns in length so should probably have expected. I've got the 1938 version of Dawn Patrol also to watch, with Niven and Flynn. There is also a 70s version of Lost Horizon which I will watch at some point.

Cheers for the thoughts. Sounds like my kind of thing. As does the 1938 one. Niven is always superb.
