Speakman gone

I suspect that this was always the plan, that once Ghisolfi had settled in and shown his worth that Speakman would be out the door.

Bit surprised to see it happen in the middle of the season like this, but maybe they've hit the point where Speakmans responsibilities had been taken over by others sooner than expected and he was left as the odd man out.

Another one of the victims of his own success, he done a really good job to get us promoted but it's clear with the quality ghisolfi identified in last summer we have gone to the next level now.

I wonder also as Adringa was a long term target for speakman it didnt reflect well that he was probably the biggest flop of the summer recuitment.

Well I think it’s bizarre that you think it’s bizarre;)

I think it's more common in other European leagues that the sporting director is much more hands on with the squad, they definitely speak to the media a lot more too. As long as he's just in the tunnel etc as a supportive presence, I think a visible sporting director provides players with continuity and reassurance, probably reinforcing the long-term vision and personal trust built during recruitment, given that it was probably him they spoke with more than the manager.

Happens plenty in the real world of work where management sells you the dream as part of the recruitment process and are then suddenly unreachable when you rock up, I prefer his approach.

I do agree though that jury is still out on Ghisolfi on anything that isn't 1st 11 squad building, lot still to prove in terms of overall club direction.

It is really possitive that a key figure has left the club on a high (for the first time I can think of).

He accomplished his job and will rightly be remembered as a major catalyst in our resurrection, but at the same time we have a man already in place who looks like he can take us to the next level.

I'm honour of the man himself, the statement should really have been written in Speakman-speak:

Sunderland AFC today confirms the immediate effectuation of Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman’s mutual disengagement from the organisation.Kristjaan served as a pivotal stakeholder throughout one of the most transformative chapters in the Club’s contemporary trajectory, exercising significant strategic influence in facilitating Sunderland’s re-elevation to the Premier League ecosystem.Onboarding in December 2020, he spearheaded an enterprise-wide recalibration of the Club’s footballing architecture, delivering a holistic reengineering of recruitment pipelines, performance enablement frameworks, and competitive velocity drivers. His tenure on Wearside was characterised by multiple high-impact deliverables at Wembley Stadium, encompassing three milestone victories—including the Club’s inaugural success at the national venue since 1973—and dual Play-Off Final triumphs that underscored executional excellence. With Premier League positioning now securely embedded and a robust, future-proofed football leadership operating model fully operationalised, the Board of Directors has taken the forward-looking decision to progress the Club’s strategic roadmap in the absence of Kristjaan’s continued involvement.

😢 im going to miss his aligment with our strategy

We live in a different pond now, so there will be changes ... did well, he made some mistakes but ultimately he helped to get us to where we wanted to be - now it's up to others to try and take us further.

He won't be short of offers.

For context, the below was the first starting 11 named when he walked in the door:

Burge

McLaughlin
Flanagan
Wright
Hume

Scowen
Leadbitter
Power

Maguire
Grigg
McGeady

I'm sorry like but there's not even room for debate on this one - anyone who doesn't think he has done an exceptional job is simply an idiot.

Thank you for everything Kristjaan. You will always be very fondly remembered here for the crucial role you played.
It’s mad seeing Hume on that team sheet.

I do wonder if the fact he couldn't convince Dan Neil and by the looks of it Dennis Cirkin to sign new contracts and protect 'assets' for PSR may have went against him too as we know contracts was one of his remits....
