Speakman gone

Tbh I’ve been thinking that privately. What’s the difference between a sporting director and a director of football?? In any case I’ll always have fond memories of speakman. His vision got us Reg, wembo and many of the lads we all love
I'd thought the split was roughly: anything going on at the AoL (player development, performance analysis) was Speakman's remit and anything outside of it (recruitment basically) was Ghisolfi's

Speakman and Harvey both did great jobs, particularly when the focus was on domestic recruitment and development. As a PL club, horizons have been expanded and I guess that this was inevitable. The only slight worry is what happens if things take a downturn. Let's just enjoy the ride though.

Speakman did a great job and wish him every happiness and success. Without him, we would not be a PL ckub.

I don’t agree with the thought that RLB is for the chop but this is a BIG departure from the established hierarchy and a quick google shows how instrumental speakman has been at building Sunderland’s new reputation
His replacement was already here and a big reason for our summer recruitment Reggie is probably safe as houses

Just wouldn't totally surprise me. They seem pretty ruthless in terms of knowing what people's ceiling is and improving. Roberts, Neil and Patterson haven't done anything wrong, but were seen as players with championship ceiling so they're straight out (or not used) with no sentiment. Speakman has been outstanding in his role and we've improved dramatically, but they obviously think for PL progression they need someone else so out he goes.

No reason to think they'll be any more sentimental about the head coach. Maybe they'll see the great work he's done and want him to continue (which most would support). Or maybe they saw him as the best man to get us up, gel the side together and set us up tactically to be hard to beat, which was seen as the best way to survive in this league. But the next step might not need the same, he might not be seen as having the proven ability to take that next step, and we'd now have a much wider pool of head coaches to choose from.

Not saying he should be under any pressure at all. For me he shouldn't. But if we look at how they've operated clinically, without sentiment, bordering on ruthless, it wouldn't be a huge shock.

I think in most clubs a sporting director would be higher. Responsibility for the academy, data, medical teams etc…. DOF recruitment and first team.

But it was always confusing. I doubt Ghisfoli with his pedigree came in to report to Speakman and the club never explained how the two roles worked together which was probably a big clue that it was a short term thing rather then the long term structure

Beale was absolutely unforgivable like.
The positive on the Beale thing is the club accepted very early they had made a mistake and acted. If they had tried to give things more time things would have been a lot worsein the dressing room and it would have been a long road back. We dont know if it was Speakman or KLD who made the early decision

Had ups and downs for sure but far more ups, hopefully we are in a good position to manage without him, hope he gets a big club in his next job.
