That sounds rather grim. I’m going to see him in Manchester tonight and hoping for a better experience. Inevitably there will be some pissed/coked up young uns but will do my best to avoid them.Strange night at Freddie Halkon at Newc uni tonight.
More my daughters thing than me but got a ticket last min to join her and a mate, and was on driving duty so maybe lack of alcohol made me grumpy - but what an strange/odd crowd and atmosphere. Maybe with it being a friday night the kids were more pissed??
Noticed during 'build up' music after support bands everyone was quite lively, then they played Fender track and clearly there was quite a few sunderland in there, seemed mainly young uns - started booing and then singing sunderland songs, without much resistance/retaliation tbf
This continued when Halkon came on, particularly in quiet bits when he changed guitars etc, but i think he didnt realise what they were singing, but he did seem to get pissed off a few times when trying to tell stories or background to songs. A few mags started singing songs at this point too - but it mostly stopped when he started playing.
Then the constant singing songs about Freddie, walking in a freddie wonderland, freddie on fire etc just got annoying
Maybe it was me just being sober but wasnt very enjoyable
A few comments about slow starts, but I Alabama 3, Ian Prowse & Ferocious Dog have all been announced since then, which I’ll be at. All Sunderland too, which is f***ing brilliant. It’s now not even a surprise when we get bands on. We’re a spot on the gig map. 10 years ago we picked up scraps & were grateful to get the odd gig where we could walk home after. Now we’re getting decent bands on regularly.Hope you’re doing ok mate.
Slow start for me.
Doors Alive - City Hall
Baz Warne (talking) - Pop Recs
Bar Stool Preachers - Independent
Destination Rolling Stones - Firestation
John Power (talking) - Durham Gala
Stanhope Weekender - Covers Festival with the bairns.
Out of all of them, it’s only Bar Stool Preachers that is a normal band show.
Maybe it was me just being sober but wasnt very enjoyable
You've described something that is sadly becoming rather common these days. The mental picture I have is of a sea of mobile phones.Strange night at Freddie Halkon at Newc uni tonight.
