Early leavers and final whistle on Sunday

So the more home games you go to, the harder it gets to stay behind for an extra 5 minutes. Unlike a concert that you might do a couple of times per year?

Well yes. If you’re only doing a concert a couple of times a year, the chance of that clashing with some other commitment is very low.

It’s also very, very rare than you buy a concert ticket for a set date and time months in advance, which is then changed at a later date.

It’s also a falsehood to say that it’s only staying behind for an extra 5 minutes. I left on 90 yesterday and got home 45 minutes earlier than I usually would.

I totally agree with you that leaving earlier just to get to the pub is crap.

This is the story of the early leavers
It's absolute rubbish.
4 minutes early = 45 minutes
We park in town , walk across the bridge and drive through Durham to Lanchester
The drive takes about ten minutes longer than the drive through

If you're getting home an extra 45 minutes early then you're travelling pretty far for games, so that's fair play to you. Not that anyone needs my approval to leave. I'm just making the point that it happens with way more people than genuine reasons. Go into any pub bang on the full time whistle, anywhere around the ground, and there's people who were in the match with a half finished pint.

For people who say who cares? It's the same as any of us saying it's a shame the atmosphere was flat. An emptying stadium at 80 minutes can also be criticised. When an atmosphere is flat, we don't say it was because a certain 10% didn't sing. So I'm not saying people who have legit reasons should hang around to please others. It happens on Saturdays too. With thousands of locals leaving to be 5 minutes ahead of the rest.

That might be the case for you, it’s not for me. When I stay to the whistle, as I do on 99% of occasions, it can take me 5 minutes just to get out of the stand due to where I sit in the ground.

By the time I get to the car the traffic has already started building and I go home via the 1231 which is nose to tail from the colliery tavern to the A19.

I agree.

Sunderland is a notoriously tough place to get away from, especially on a Monday night when more people have drive than there usually would be.

There’s essentially only 3 routes away from the stadium/city. West on the 1231, south over the town bridge, or up Newcastle road.

All 3 have bottle necks at some point and it can take absolutely ages.
It was bad enough being stuck in traffic when we only had 30k on a Tuesday in league one.
Luckily for me I haven’t driven this season

Infrastructure is poor especially when strained on a weeknight

So people don’t live in Sunderland. I live in Newcastle, near the airport. Only ever leave early on school nights, it’s the difference of a 35 min drive or a 1hr 15 min (minimum) drive.

As long as my kids are school age I’ll be leaving on 88 mins or so.

Aye, it got noticeably busier when we got promoted to the championship and then again in the PL.

Especially on weeknights when more people drive.

I'm not doubting the people who travel hours to attend. They do more than I have to do. The stadium begins to empty every week, way more than you could say they're all driving hours away. I know people who leave to be first at the bar. Many people. I'm one person who knows these people. I'm sure many people know those who do. Anyone who thinks it doesn't look bad is blind.

How many people go to concerts and leave before the final couple of songs because they're up early in the morning? I'm guessing not many.
Yeah people do leave to get to the bar I know them too & if they choose to do that absolutely fine it’s their day out too. It’s some people’s only chance to see their mates.

I’ve seen plenty people at gigs leave before the end, again up to them.

I walk down with about 30 seconds left of stoppage time as I’d rather not be stuck on the steps waiting to get out, that’s up to me as well.

Seems weird to me, price I’ve paid for a season ticket I’m watching every minute! And I think it’s fair to stick around to applaud the team after they put in a performance like last night.

That said, got a lot more sympathy for folks on a Monday night late kick off, than I would Saturday 3pm.

To each their own I guess. I cannot understand why anyone would want to leave before the whistle - for me, supporting Sunderland isn't about seeing some goals then f***ing off home before the rush, I want to applaud the players off the pitch and show them my appreciation.

I don't care if I get home 30 mins later than everyone else. What I cannot understand is people leaving on 85 mins when we're defending a 1 goal lead (for example). The nerves have me frozen to the seat, unable to move or speak. Agree that it doesn't look great on the telly when people are f***ing off, but you will always get that 10-15% of the fanbase who aren't as committed and tuned-in and the rest. As long as none of the fuckers stand up or get in my way when they leave then good luck to them

I left about 5 mins after the final whistle.

Drove back to Gosforth and was in the house by 10:45. I dont find the traffic that bad when coming away from the ground.
Same. Left about 10 mins after the whistle, parked at the Retail Park, dropped my mate in Roker then was home by 2250. Would have been sooner if it wasn't for the f***ing tunnel and another coincidental "routine maintenance" night when Sunderland are at home.

Where do you park? Maybe I need to find an alternative parking spot.

FWIW, I got in about 5 past 10. I’d normally have gotten in at the same time as you. On a normal game I’m not arsed about sitting in traffic, I’m happy to listen to the radio. I made an exception last night due to my early start this morning.

Near the Alexandra Bridge, just along from the MG garage.

Just make sure the car is parked facing the way you need to get out.

Absolutely disgusting tonight, lads played amazingly well and ground is half empty at the 85th minute. Utterly pathetic.
It's the same at every club and generally worse on night games - fwiw didn't look that bad on TV

Don’t think he’s far off. We left just before 90 and was back in Chester le street at 10.20ish. Staying the extra would have been 15/20 mins getting out from up the top of PC where we sit, slower up kier hardy way, then hitting the traffic that builds up along the 1231 up to the a19 roundabout. Probably saved 30-40 mins.
