SMB Film Thread 2026

sinners black movie
+5

Sinners (2025) is a supernatural horror-thriller directed by Ryan Coogler, featuring Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers returning to their 1930s Mississippi hometown. The film blends Southern Gothic, blues music, and vampire elements as they fight an "even greater evil". It is a high-profile, black-led, and Black-centered production, released in April 2025.

The Velvet Touch (1948)

Rosalind Russell is a highly successful theatre comedy actress tied to her boyfriend/manager Leon Ames. She wants to spread her wings and star in serious plays but he won’t allow it. Controlling and entitled, he micromanages her career and it causes great resentment. Enter architect Leo Genn, who barely knows who she is. They want to get married, and Russell tries to encourage Ames’ ex Claire Trevor to steam in and reclaim the domineering prick. There’s an argument and Russell inadvertently kills Ames. All fingers point at Trevor, and Sydney Greenstreet investigates.

Engrossing noir where we see a person wrestling with their conscience. She has finally got what she wants - artistic freedom, true love and self-determination. However, it has come at a price: she’s killed someone and allowing another person to take the blame. The lead character is slightly muddled, so Russell didn’t always land the scenes, but on the whole is a decent performance. Greenstreet is fabulous in a small role that feels like a prototype Columbo. Trevor is Trevor. Great.

Despite the psychology behind the story being a bit underdeveloped and muddled, I thoroughly enjoyed this, especially the ending, which I found to be hypnotically immersive.

7.5/10

Shelter (omniplex). Jason stathham is a man with a past. Lots of familiar ideas cobbled together in search of a plot. Never really gets going and despite its best attempts it has no heart. 5/10

Checkpoint (1956)

Anthony Steel, James Robertson Justice, Stanley Baker and Lee Patterson star in this yarn set in Italy. JRJ has tasked Baker with a bit of industrial espionage. Things go tits up and Baker is a wanted man.

Baker is great and the car racing sections are pretty good for the era. The location work is lovely but it’s all pretty middle of the road, despite the promise.

5/10

Sinners 7/10 - probably had too high expectations some good performances but a bit long for my taste
Went into this with an open mind but I've got to be honest, I'm astounded at the hype.
Its honestly not very good.
The rave reviews seem well wide of the mark.

Dust Bunny(2025). Like a cross between Leon and Delicatessen this is a decent way to spend 100 minutes. Some ropey CGI but also some excellent set pieces. 6.5/10.

Watched this last night, luke warm reviews had kept my expectations low. Watched it mainly for Mads, Bryan Singer i can take or leave...

This was a brilliant Friday night movie, daft premise about monsters under beds actually eventually made for an entertaining watch, thankfully under 2 hours aswell. First 20 mins had me doubting my choice, but then it gets going.

7.5

Also, Anaconda 2025 - Expected the worst, but actually it's just a daft/silly film that it sets out to be, Jack Black is Jack Black once again, Paul Rudd even has his moments and I always have a soft spot for Thandiew Newton (Wad). Harmless film, watch once for slight amusement and forget 6/10
I thought the same
A Clockwork Orange 1971 1/10
Started to watch it for the first time Friday night, lasted about an hour. Complete load of shite. Looks like it was made by people on drugs for people on drugs. I'll file that with The Warriors, massively overrated, hasn't aged well and complete dogshit

Soz I have always thought it was shite, was built up to be some classic but never got it

Therefore, you're gonna struggle to make it back to Seaburn tonight.
Alright teenyboppers...
The Gorge.
A romantic, horror, thrill mystery that combines being a good watch with being unwatchable.

Agreed re ACO, as with most Kubrik filums, "arty" shite.

Disagree about The Warriors mind.

Enjoyed The Rip, some toing and froing in the storyline to keep you on your toes and a lot of tension. I felt they let that tension go a bit later in the film when

but all in all a good bit of entertainment. 7/10
