Michael Carrick

People falling for it again. They did it with Solskjaer when he was caretaker, they did it with Rangnick (1 defeat in first 15) and it all fell apart once the novelty wears out.

Man Utd usually turn up for these big games but after a couple of months they revert back to their usual standards.

On another day, Dorgu and Cunha put those shots 10 yards over the bar.

The players are super excited to be off the dogmatic leash of RA. All Carrick has to do is keep that going for just over three months 18 games iirc and he will be almost guaranteed the job. Whether he really really wants it I don’t know. There’s enough very good players there to get half a seasons very good results.

He's just got the team doing the basics well. Gone are Amorim's over complicated tactics bigging the players down. You can see the players are enjoying that bit more freedom on the pitch.

The one thing that was never doubted at Boro was his relationship with the players - they all said his man management was great. I think that's probably why he's made a quick difference at United, just getting good players to believe in themselves again as much as any tactical changes.
I think the PL will suit him more than championship because I don't see many teams playing with 10 men behind the ball and that was the huge weakness we had in his time at Boro.

Carrick started off his Boro career excellently.
When he took over we were in (or very close to) the bottom three, and we very nearly went up automatically that season.
The football was outstanding and exciting too.

Why we didn't kick on under him was imo down to a few factors.
His best players were often sold (mid season sometimes)
He could have done with an experienced assistant to help with tactics etc .
He wouldn't (or didn't know how to) change his system to counterract opponents that were obviously sussing us out.

As long as he's learnt that he needs to change tactics at times, and the fact that he is working with better players (who should be able to play to his system), together with a decent sidekick, I reckon he'll do well there.
Hope so cos I've nothing against him, just a shame things didn't work out with us the end.
You started off by saying how well he'd done when he first went there but then described his lack of dynamics when thing got tough. Meaning he's either not good enough or he's too inexperienced. Appointing ex-players to appease the fans usually only ends one way unfortunately.

I heard it suggested on the radio this morning that Carrick could be a better coach in the PL than he was with Boro in the EFL.

It made me wonder if there’s something in this or whether ALL coach’s would be better with elite players to work with.

Le Bris is possibly another example where you could argue is methods, attention to detail & the response he gets from these top players etc are far more affective this season than last.

On the flip side if you put Simon Grayson in charge of Man City, would he look better or would his ‘limitations’ only be even more cruelly exposed?

Well yes.
He did do really well at first, but obviously his lack of experience or possibly his stubbornness when opponents started sussing his tactics led to us not reacting well enough.
Whether it was just lack of experience or a flaw in his ability will become apparent I would think.

What are the chances that Ratcliffe gives the job to him permanently?

Well he has an all white team of staff, which must stand him in good stead.
Very high. For someone so successful, guy seem a bit of idiot.

Had a great start but his record at Middlesboro should automatically keep him out the running long term.

Wouldn't necessarily agree with that - some managers are better suited to certain jobs. I think Carrick would do better than both Amorim and Ten Hag if he was given the chance at Man Utd permanently.

In a sense I agree, different jobs suite different managers.

But this is just nostalgia pipe toking. I reckon he’ll be found out before the end of the season personally and not get offered the job. But time will tell.
