Chris Rigg

You can’t compare Foden to Rigg man.

Compare him to Miley then. Rigg is 11 months his junior.

At Riggs age Miley had loads more premier league starts, some goals & champions league starts.

Rigg has been hyped to be a future England player and even captain due to how he came through at 15, but he’s not much better now than he was at the start of last season. He looks out of his depth in the PL and didn’t stand out for the 21s the other day.

I agree

Comparing an outlier to another outlier there like, Miley has done fuck all compared to Lamine Yamal - see how easy it is.

Rigg is progressing really well and has miles more experience under his belt than 99.9% of players of his age.

Progressing but where at? He hasn’t played well for a long time. He isn’t progressing at all

Just because he isn't being thrown in at the deep end doesn't mean he isn't progressing.

You have to be exceptional to be a regular first teamer at the highest level as a teenager. Very few manage it and I bet there are miles more that have been psychologically ruined by trying than have pulled it off.

First team debuts in the Premier League are something like 22 on average.

Expectation being placed on him by some is absolutely crackers.

I remember embo being highly rated and playing for England youths and arsenal were after him we kept him just training at the club not playing proper football and he regressed

It isn't. Males tend to grow fastest around 16, after that it may take as long as up to 20 for the brain to totally recalibrate. Rigg appears to be a late developer, as he has clearly grown a lot over the past twelve months we can probably expect to see his brain recalibrate over the next two years.

  • End of Growth: Most boys stop growing in height by age 16, though muscle development and neural recalibration continue until roughly age 20.
Is it really clear that he's grown a lot over the past 12 months? Like how much do you think he's grown. To be honest I haven't noticed, so surprised it's just a matter of fact with people on here that he's grown. Has something came out in an interview? I feel like I must be missing something.

Moving up a level plays some part in that as well. I keep saying it but he's still only 18, years and years of development in him yet

I think Rigg himself will want to play football. I'm sure it was a right buzz to be training with Xhaka in pre-season, but when it comes to game day and he knows its highly unlikely that you'll get on the pitch, that buzz will sharp wear off. Now, Diarra, and Talbi are back, that puts him even further down the pecking order and back playing u23 games.

I'm sure Rigg himself will feel like its a bit of a backward step playing in the U23's when he was playing regularly in the Championship last season. I wouldn't be surprised if he asks if he can go out and get some competitive football and I wouldn't blame him.

We seem to have a good balance between planning each players future path to improvement so I trust them to decide between them. He is still a very young lad who when he is getting minutes is in a different position. His development was always going to be up and down and I wouldn't mind if they both decide a loan is needed till the end of the season for game time, but I wouldn't want him feeling isolated and pushed out at his age away from the North east away from his family and not having the connection with the 1st team squad. He isn't doing anything wrong when he plays. He just isn't pulling up any trees but I'm adamant he will make it big in football and I hope it's with us

I think Rigg will back the clubs judgement, they've done very well by him for a long time

I don't think he'd feel isolated or pushed out. Many big teams loan their better young lads out due to not being able to give them the competitive games required. Due to the club going up and the recruitment going to the next level (or even above) Rigg's future has become more difficult. Just look at last seasons young Captain for that. It won't get any easier for Rigg next season with the club and fans alike expecting signings to push on again

There's post on here about Brighton wanting to let young Tommy out for game time due to him having limited opportunities. I'm sure Tommy himself will be wanting games rather than sitting in the sidelines or reserves. These lads are clearly levels above U23's now, and have played senior first team football at a good standard in The Championship. It seems to make sense to me for Rigg to continue to play at that level, learn about making real mistakes and game changing decisions. He came into the spotlight early due to his skillset, I'm sure he'd feel frustrated that he made good strides forward only to be back playing at a level he was 3 seasons ago.

Ah I don't disagree with anything you have said. I thought he might have had way more minutes but others have performed to the extent they are ahead of him which is normal at his age. IF he wanted to get some minutes then a loan to a top half championship club could be a good thing.

As you say Kane, Pickford, Beckham, Henderson and loads of others have gained from the game time. I was against it before but am now siding with seeing him get his minutes and more experience until the end of the season but only if he is up for it

Tbf Embleton was always too small and weak to succeed at a high level. Rigg is taller but needs to get stronger, which should come with age.

I can see both sides of the argument really, he'll probably get another half a dozen appearances between now and the end of the season which isn't nothing, and would be good Premier League experience, but maybe getting 20 starts at Championship level would be better for him?

Look at it this way, when everyone is fit he's nowhere near the starting 11.
Come summer id expect us to be looking for at least another midfielder for cover, especially if we got some kind of euro football. That will push him further down the pecking order.

Going from being a regular starter to perhaps having 2 seasons after next season of bit parts isn't going to help anyones game development, regardless of training with the first team.

Personally speaking, if he was offered a loan move to a decent standard team where he'd get more starts id think that would be beneficial to all concerned

Progressing well are you joking :) :) :) Aye progressing well to be at a league 1 side on a few years

I don’t think he will play again after this window
I don't tbh, it's not surprising that a young player has a dip. Patience is needed with him sadly I think some fans don't accept that
Also some fans don’t accept that he might not be very good and have based their opinion on him scoring a back heel two seasons ago
