IIRC it determined that the platforms are too narrow at Monkwearmouth to be put back in use
There's also the problems of it being a Grade II* listed building/site.

Theres a shed that sells coffee ain't there? Maybe that was the grand visionThe echo are crap like. They’ve done same article several times now. Surely they can look a bit deeper into it and interview other people linked to it?
Best wishes trying to read the article on the website

Thing is apart from a coffee shed, who else could make money or even want to shove the money in to open a business in there. It’s often the case that they’ll do a half arsed, temporary solution. As I said they should have relocated the station entirely. They could have built it from scratch and made it much better. All we have here in the modern version of old shed place they used to have before.
Not surprised tbh

Doubt network rail are overly bothered. Let's be honest opening anything up business wise apart from a shed selling coffee is a pretty big risk. No doubt the reason it just sits there empty.Network rail don't help themselves with their business model. Expensive monthly rent plus a percentage of any profits.
The platform area is horrendous.London Underground’s stations are light and airy compared to this dark dismal dreary dump. It’s often the case that they’ll do a half arsed, temporary solution. Could do with a WHSmith and a Burger King…oh wait!Thing is apart from a coffee shed, who else could make money or even want to shove the money in to open a business in there.

Pretty much my feelings on it too. Plenty of space after the match when it's busy and it does the job absolutely fine.I really don't get the hate for the improvements. The glass frontage looks ten times better than what it was.
It looks a bit empty inside but its a train station at the end of the day. Its primarily just a space for people to enter the station and then go underground to the platforms.
Room for further improvement definitely but it ain't that bad.
It's a weird one like. It's an open space to stand about in before going for your train. Nice and clean and spacious. Perfectly fine for what it's for.I really don't get the hate for the improvements. The glass frontage looks ten times better than what it was.

Aye same here. It really just needs some better seat layouts and to be a bit more full looking. I wonder if anyone constantly moaning about it has been to Newcastle lately, that glass frontage bit they added on, all the bars and fancy places that opened in there are all empty now, apart from one coffee place.I really don't get the hate for the improvements. Honestly should have just kept the drop off point, it's a shambles there now.Aye same here. It really just needs some better seat layouts and to be a bit more full looking. What was a disgrace was the Rsoles smashing them up. Think this happened a few times.Have they got the toilets open yet it was an absolute disgrace a train station with no working toilets
Same people would moan if an absolute fortune had been spent on an all singing all dancing amazingly designed futuristic amazeballs of a station. Christ, it's only a train station waiting area. Money could have been used to open imaginary shops or the ice rink ffs.Compared to the old pokey little entrance which didn't look very nice at all the new glass front looks very good.
I get what people say about the platforms being dull but it is underground so it will be limited on what can be done.
Brighter walls and more lighting maybe but other than that I cannot see how to improve other than demolishing the place and starting again. With the buildings above how much would that cost.
Yeah. The scumbags who continually smashed them up are a disgrace.Have they got the toilets open yet it was an absolute disgrace a train station with no working toilets
