Patrick Roberts to Birmingham compendium

I liked Roberts. He probably wouldn't fit our system now and the data would probably say he isn't good enough but he excited me and got me out of my seat
It was often noted that Le Fee was the same type of player but because Roberts didn't have a fancy name his first touches went unnoticed.

You didn't see Roberts covering for our left back to make last ditch challenges one minute, to being in the box for a cross the next.

I love Paddy, but he's very much a luxury entertainer and doesn't go beyond that. His biggest failing was being unable to breaks his goal drought with us, and he honestly didn't recover from losing Amad on that side.

I like being entertained

This isnt fifa. Hume is put there for a specific job and system and hes fare more effective at it than Roberts would be at his role.

For about 2 seconds until he ran into somebody or had a shot with marshmallow feet power.
Eh? He glided past players. What games were you watching?

No he doesnt
He does. Roberts scored 2 goals in total in his last 2 seasons. 2 in 80 games. One of them a penalty. Piss poor.

Talbi has 2 in 16.

Roberts just doesn't have the end product, especially for the PL. No shame in that but hes miles off it.... i wouldn't even want him as a starter if we didn't get promoted.

I dont subscribe to the open play shite. A penalty is a goal. Simple as that. He had more assists last season than anyone in the team. Why ignore that?

Okay then, look at it that way and talbi has equalled his tally in 16 games in a higher division and it took Roberts 80 in the 2nd tier. Doesn't sound much better does it?

Hes just not good enough. Theres a reason hes nearly 30 and nobody has really thought hes a top level footballer in a proper league worthy of playing.

People wanting to recall him is just pure Sunderland pining for ex players and managers.

His lack of goals from open play is a huge flaw in his game.

He's got a quarter of the assists Roberts got last season. If he can get to 4, thats far more impressive in a proper league like the PL rather than the rubbish championship.

Why are you so defensive about him? You'll not accept any criticism or a negative opinion on him.

Paddy would probably have looked about the same in this team as he did last season in many respects. His running with the ball and trickery is premier standard and he’d have better players around him. He’d be a joy and the most frustrating player in the side at the same time but, despite working really hard defensively, I don’t think he’d have the physicality to look comfortable in this league. As a last 15 impact probably still exciting but we need more and he deserves more.

It really isn't, hence absolutely no premier League clubs wanting him

How am i not accepting criticism? If anything you seem upset that people like him, even making stuff up. Its crazy

I'm not disagreeing, but I would argue that his tracking back increased (probably due to tactics) and he struggled to get up and down the pitch.

Personally I think it's the right decision to move him on but he has been an excellent servant to the club. Being a winger is a young man's game.

What have I made up? The stat I posted that you told me was incorrect was actually proven to be right...

Unless you can prove otherwise

Don't disagree with a word of that. He'll always be well thought of by me

This. Probably moved on from him but he was a brilliant watch. Yeah frustrating at times but thats part and parcel of his position but some of his tricks, faints, first touches were wonderful to watch. I'll always have fantastic memories of him especially after Wembley
