Matchday Parking

We park in Roker, but curious about option for Tesco to cut 10 min from walk.

Anyone park there regularly? Recommend, or a nightmare to get out of? Is it pay on entry or pre book?

I believe they have limited spaces available on one of the parking apps.

You book and pay on there.

£3 for the riverside multi storey, which was busier than usual I thought. I thought I saw something that suggested it was going to be £1, but never mind, I might have got mixed up.

Certainly took longer to get out than normal, and that was after hanging around the founders for a while.

I think it was £1 an hour from what I saw

Riverside multi-storey used to be ideal until Keel Crossing opened. A lot busier now and takes an age to get out of. Now parking well outside town and getting some steps in, much quicker getting home than sitting for an hour to get out the multi-storey.

How do you know
I don’t, that’s why I didn’t say it as a statement of fact. I said “I doubt” and “I’m sure”

I just can’t think of a reason that someone would have no other option but to park on a permit street without a permit.

Maybe mobility issues but without a blue badge, but even then southwick is probably further away than some of the multi-storeys.

It’s shit people got done, but I personally don’t think anyone can really have any complaints

At the entrance to the permit areas they usually put the date on the sign to inform when permits are needed, i.e. at the junction of Carley and Thompson Road. I assume people just missed that and parked assuming there'd be no checks? If there was no date or the wrong date I reckon that'd be grounds for appeal.

I live 5 minutes walk from Fellgate metro and it takes only 10 minutes to the SOL metro station so its ideal for me. Last night was the first time in over 20 years that I've taken the car I parked at the back of Tesco on Fulwell Road I got parked but it was rammed cars parked on any inch of spare space.

The dates were up, I saw the guy changing it a few days ago. Only the 2nd time I've actually seen the person changing it in the 25 years I've lived in the estate.

I think people may be getting caught out now as the residents no longer get a permit to display. So if they see a load of cars with no permits they may think they're OK to park there. You register your car online and it's then in a digital database and I assume the ticket wardens now scan the reg's on their device, if it doesn't match they check for disabled badge or scratch card permit and if none present issue the ticket.

Have you tried the your parking space app- last time I looked there were spaces available at the retail park next to Tesco’s.

I use it. I have done for ages. For £40 you can park there whenever you want for as long as you want. It’s like a rolling payment plan. I try to park as close as I can to that bit of path linking the main road to the car park. Getaway is usually minutes. I can be on the exit at Shore Street in about 3-4 minutes.

Any suggestions on where to park where, I can also charge the car whilst I'm at the match?

Great posts. Made me feel very nostalgic about the places mentioned. When I was a lad in Sunderland in the early 60s I used to get the 74 bus from Pennywell to Park Lane & then walk through the town to Roker Park. Crossing the Bridge used to make me nervous & it always felt as if it was wobbling. It used to seem as if most of the 40,000 crowd were all marching together.

But my earliest football memory was living in Bright Street and seeing hordes going to and later from Roker Park - a bit like the scene in a Lowry painting.

Feel sorry for those driving to the match, straight there and straight back

What a way to suck the enjoyment out of a matchday

The event is much more than 90 minutes. All the chew of trying to race away to beat traffic etc. Shite

Matchday lasts from 11am-9pm for me. And 4x as much time is spent in the pub than the 2 hours in the stadium

How else am I going to indoctrinate my kids?

My wife lived on Bright Street in the Roker Park Days and she said the sight of the Rain or snow being lite up by floodlight on night matches is something she remembers well.

They'll be along soon to call you a plonky

Worth considering the public car park at the Marina ( Harbour view car Park ) Cost 90p per hour or £3 all day .. Then its a nice stroll towards the ground via Roker pass the University ( north side ) with a few pubs on the way . Queen Vic, Harbour View , These Things happen, The Wolsey. Then under the St Peters Metro Bridge. All of them do food.

Bumping this… looking for somewhere to park the car and will need to head north of the river after the match. Ideally be able to charge the car during the match too. Riverside or St Mary’s the better option?
