Dan Neil

Yeah, I am not saying Neil should be starting regularly for Sunderland just like to completely freeze him out when players are dead on their feet and we have players missing, I don't really get myself.

Like just a slight bit of rotation might have helped at some point, who knows. Very strange considering loads of others players from last year been used

I dont get this forum, Dan Neil actuallt gets loads of stick despite the fact he has not played this season, and helped drag us up 2 promotions and literally captained us to promtoion in his last start

We need to sell him and let him get a career going again as it’s not fair on him to be just frozen out for a year of his life.
I think the likes of Rigg are played in the hope we can boost his market value. Neil isn’t as attractive for clubs due to him not being as young. He has definitely earned his chance to get some opportunities to play in this league tho

Poor lad deserves better this season. Put in so many good performances the last couple of seasons and Regis picks Rigg ahead of him. You can’t tell me that Rigg offers more to the team than Neil does…
Defensively on the rw Reggie clearly thinks so, he’s basically said that Riggs intelligence and understanding of the game is why he’s stuck him out there during Afcon.

Neil should probably have come on a lil more over the last month but the gaffer has his reasons and he’s been right more than he’s been wrong this season imo.

So why does he get played RW

Agree. Feel very sorry for him especially after how much he’s done for the club. He definitely wouldn’t have done worse than Rigg at RW last night

There's an obsession on here of excusing absolutely everything with Rigg because he's playing wide or young.

The criticism of his play isn't aimed at how little he's created. It's to do with him continually being physically overrawed and being unable to pass or retain the ball with any regularity. People who think that would suddenly improve in a more condensed central role are mental.

As long as a contract isn't signed and he has no future here then Rigg will get in ahead of him every time - it will benefit us more in the long term.

There is also the possibility that Le Bris doesn't rate Neil as being good enough anyway.
It will only come as a detriment to the team as shown last night

Regis is protecting him.

If we could see him doing that he wouldn't have to tell us or repeat it.

He's played then when initially introduced, he played there last season.

No one expects winger like play from him out there, chances created etc - that isn't the issue with him. Physically he simply isn't ready yet - that's why he looks uncomfortable.
Yup, he started dairly brightly imo, he was commited, winning the ball a couple od times in dangerous positions, he was involved in a couple of good passing moves and he linked up well. Then it seemed to go to pot. He was knocked off the ball and started to put in silly challenges. He started to loom isolated and couldnt find his man.

It will come for him but he still needs to develpp physocally and mentally.

Yeah it would only get harder for him in the middle.

Despite Enzos poor penalty yesterday, he shows every game that his skill and understanding is what makes him very good in midfield. I just can’t see Rigg possessing the same skill or understanding. I feel he would be better in a foreign league which is less physical and more time and space on the ball

Very true. Currently being vastly over rated. Doesn't mean he isn't a decent player, or will become an even better one, but little to suggest he is as good as the hype at the moment.

Did okay when he came on last night, but Brentford had dropped into 2nd gear.

All irrelevant really, he’s not signing a contract so better to develop players who want to be here.

What like Cirkin?
He didn't play well last night, but I disagree anyway that Neil is a better option on the wing.

not on wing, but read this thread, why the idea is so repulsive that he can even be involved in anyone I just find strange!

We've progressed at a rate he's been unable to and that shouldn't be a suprise - it's happened to a few from last season. He's only 18 and was only developing himself, he hadn't got to the point where he was consistently good in the Championship.

I think the club want Cirkin to renew though, whereas they’re not arsed if Neil leaves.

We also don’t actually have another LB at the club as they’ve both been away at AFCON. Neil would’ve played if we’d have injuries to Xhaka & Gerty.

I completely understand why they pick Rigg over Neil - one is younger, has a higher ceiling and has a long term contract. The other might be gone in a few weeks time.
But there's no reason to have frozen Neil out as they have, he was our captain until this season, he's a local lad and has done a fine job for us. Maybe not a starter, but fresh legs from 80mins could have been useful this past month, you'd think. Suppose we'll never really know what's gone on behind closed doors though.

Errr, he was frozen out of the side for the first one mind.

At the end of the day, Neil's best role is the one Xhaka currently occupies. And Xhaka is looking like one of the best players we've ever had.
