The irony is his era changed their fan base somewhat, for most of the 90s plastic mag his time as manager was the invention of football. Whereas he was grounded in the era of the region where the north east identify was slightly more agnostic to the football. Perhaps as an outsider he could see the difference but appreciate the rivalry all the same.
 
Kevin Keegan... he once banned me from St James' in the 90s, but he is a proper football legend. Great player for Liverpool, England, Hamburg, Southampton and that other lot... then, of course, he did what he did as manager. I always liked him, notwithstanding that ban!

It was mentioned on radio Newcastle, they said abdominal problems made him visit hospital and cancer diagnosed. Is there ever any good news

Oh, yes! They didn't like the tone of a Monday morning column when we suggested assistant manager Terry McDermott did not know what was happening with Andy Cole and an England call-up. It was crackers.
The ban was rescinded about 5 weeks later after Freddy Shepherd and Douglas Hall admitted they were worried that I'd been appointed by my paper to "do a Swindon" corruption investigation on them!
Paranoid? You might well think that...
