Can't imagine Ellis Short is a big Martin O'Neil fan tbh.
Well the Di Fantai appointment meant the end of Martin O’Neill.
People have selective memories Martin O'Neill kept us up but it rarely gets mentioned on here.

Aye - how’s his missus doing these days?He was a joke. Playing a game on a Saturday then him but more importantly letting the players have a few days off then come back on a Thursday. Lazy lazy manager who would never be able to manage in the modern game. He football was embarrassingly bad to watch
I think “excellent hit rate” is being more than kind.
Take out his tenure at Celtic and the couple of jobs where he managed twenty games or less and his “hit rate” is far from excellent. Just have a look at his win percentage on wiki.
I think anything above ‘journeyman manager with some modest success sitting more credit than he’s earned.

I remember he kept us up, but then I remember Di Canio did also. Ultimately I remember him for wasting a load of money and playing the least enjoyable football from my time as a Sunderland fan.
Don't get me wrong, I dont dislike the chap but as far as Sunderland tenure go, I remember one spent the thick end of 300m on us, horribly, and the other heavily contributed to the short terms decisions that saw us plummet.
Pretty much my feelings. He was probably a product of the shitshow of an environment around the club at the time, but you are right about the football we played (outside of that initial 15 games or so)I remember he kept us up, but then I remember Di Canio did also. I think his points are valid but you can easily counteract that by saying you can make up for the lack of wealth by creating great scouting networks and hiring the right managers.. Brentford, Brighton and Bournemouth spring to mind.
Or Stoke City mate, they have very rich owners so on paper one of the most underachieving clubs in England.Glazer’s era Man U are a good example of why revenue doesn’t guarantee success mind
Are you surprised as a previous club owner looks at the game itself only in terms of finances? In the long run statistically unless your spurs (consistently for decades under performing with a high revenue)those clubs with the most financial clout populate the top six places in the prem...Simon Jordan is a tossa
Don't think it's fair to say he wasted a load of money. We only paid fees for 4 players - Johnson, Fletcher, Graham and N'Diaye. Johnson and Fletcher were good players for us, we got 3.5 years of good service from them both and Johnson obviously would have been one of our best players for years to come had he not done what he did. Ndiaye looked decent and had a good career but was immediately bombed out by Di Canio - even after Di Canio left people were still calling for Poyet to recall and use him. Graham was the only complete dud and should never have been signed but it was £5m not £50m - we spent more than that on Altidore and similar to the N'Diaye fee on Buckley, Bridcutt etc.I remember he kept us up, but then I remember Di Canio did also. We were 16th in the league when he was sacked and finished 17th, having only needed 5 points from 7 games to stay up.
Not defending O'Neill in particular as he was ultimately a shit manager amongst a list of other shit managers but it kind of amuses me when people still go on about that Norwich game when it wasn't even our worst performance at home to Norwich during that era.
Di Canio never kept us up man.
We finished lower than we were when he was appointed.
We have to capitalise on itIts absolute pantomime season at some clubs this season honestly
