Running Thread 2026

I've went to the gym for a treadmill run , to make it feel like I haven't been lazy today
Effort
Haha loved it out in the snow this morning, steady HM, just whacked an extra layer on

Tremendous graft! My chest wouldn’t like running in that today. Although I am going to have to take the little one for a walk, which I’m counting as physical activity.

Cheers, I really enjoyed it like not that often it snows now so something different. Had a bit of a chesty cough in the run up to Xmas myself so today was a bit of a tester to see how I was. Hoping I feel alright so I can attempt my ultra next weekend

Which ultra?
I ended 25 on a bit of a high so somewhere close to 1000 miles this year would be great. I'm probably too old for PB's so I'll just keep plodding on and hopefully manage to run during the summer.
Not always about pb’s - but you could always compare yourself to last year, or set benchmark runs in Jan and try to outdo yourself that way?

Just my own, mapped out a 52.5km route around Peterlee, Murton, Seaham, Easington etc. Had planned to do it last weekend but wasn't happening with that cough I had, thought about doing it this weekend but 5+ hours out in this cold would've been unwise

That final climb looks f***ing torturous 😂 dropping you a follow so I can see the pain.

I know, even the reverse way would have me climbing up Crimdon and Blackhall banks at the end 😓 Should the attempt be unsuccessful I think I'll wait for one of those Saturn runs again.

Ah yes cheers, returned the follow

Can’t recommend those Saturn runs enough like. Loved it and relatively flat when I did mine. Not sure I can be arsed to go through it again mind….. focus on Elche HM in March then I may be persuaded 😂

760 odd miles ran in 2023
102 miles ran in 2024 all in pain
0 miles ran in 2025

Finally had surgery in August to repair a hip labral tear that occurred back in November 2023. Removed some loose tissue and shaved some of the bone whilst they were there that had caused an impingement that's given me a load of regular small issues around my hip, groin, knee and IT band all on the same side since Covid. This morning was my first run outdoors since 11th September 2024, not sure I've ever felt relief quite like it. I've got some small permanent scarring on my lungs from pneumonia when I was at uni in 2014 that makes my lungs absolutely scream at me when I start building up, currently sounded like Wheezy in Toy Story 2 for the last couple of hours

Here's to a fully functioning hip (hopefully) and trying to stay healthy in 2026.
Congrats on already beating your total mileage for 2025, though. :)

Perfect age to start. I started when I was 34, then stopped for a year or so at 36 then got right into it from about 37 onwards.

I’d recommend a watch fwiw mind, just easier than carrying your phone on runs. There are some great deals to be had at the likes of start fitness for a garmin or coros
Never too late to start. I was approaching 40, overweight after too many business lunches and car miles.
Hardest parts is getting out of the door. Take it easy and work up to whatever suits you.

Looks like D.A isn't in the mood at the moment so I'll deputise.

What's everyone's goals for this year?

For me it's to get back to being able to train consistently again & get through a full marathon block without missing more than 10% of the miles & to get my age grade % back up to a decent level for races & parkruns.
Why do you missed the miles?
Big year for me last year, would like to achieve at least some of the following in 2026

50k+ Ultra
A 100km week
2000km for the year (1658km in 2025)
The Goggins 4x4x48 challenge

Currently booked up for the Windermere Marathon in June, waiting to hear if I get a spot for Valencia Marathon in December.....if not I'll try Athens Marathon in November when the entries open. As always I will be doing the Sunderland 10k and might enter the Middlesbrough half too.

All the best for 2026 RTG Runners
Ultras really shouldn't be 50k races. Good luck with the rest

Unsure what you mean? Technically speaking anything over a marathon is Ultra, but generally it's after 50k where people sort of define it as one.

The over a mara bit is my gripe. What's ultra about 4 or 5 mile, the added distance over a mara for 50k? Just a personal thing I guess. To me an Ultra should be 100k plus.

Yeah seems an unnecessary gripe haha, most people can't even run 4 mile never mind on top of a marathon.

Maybes we need new terms for the longer distances, 50k can be Ultra, 50 miles can be the Deluxe and 100k can be the Archiesdad 😅
