Diarra out till December

I don't think he should be going to the AFCON considering he hasn't had any minutes before the tournament and still isn't fit enough for the bench at this stage.

That's entirely up to Senegal though.

Wonder if even he'd be ready for the bench on Sunday we just leave him out anyway in the hope of convincing them he's not ready.

Diarra’s unlikely to be selected if he isn’t fully match fit—unless he were a genuine star, which he isn’t at this stage. There’ll be little chance to build sharpness once the tournament starts, as every game demands players operating at full intensity.

It’s probably better for him to stay here, work on his fitness, and build towards a start in the FA Cup third round on 10 January—by which time AFCON will be nearly finished anyway.

If he returns in good shape and establishes himself in the Premier League, he’ll be well positioned for their World Cup plans.

It's likely that he will be picked since they can name a squad of 28 players. Even if there's only an outside chance of him being half-fit for the knockouts after Xmas they can afford to pick him and still have enough cover with the larger squad.

Surely he is a genuine star given he’s just been signed by a PL team for £30m? But yeah I’d hope he doesn’t go given he can’t be near fit at the moment most likely.

Even if he's fit, he wouldn't be guaranteed a place in the first eleven. So by star I mean like one of the first names on the team sheet. I think he could be in the future, but right now he doesn't have that status on Senegal.

Senegal was due to announce squad on the 4th but has delayed it as the coach was at WC draw. So suspect it will be announced over the next couple of days and everybody will be put out of their misery. Matches are on 23rd, 27th and 30th December, I would be surprised given Diarra has been out 3 months if he is called up having not played a minute. Whatever happens it will be agreed between the club, player and Senegal so no point in worrying about it. We probably haven't even seen the best of him yet and won't until New Year back end of January there is no way Senegal are going to get the best out of him over the next 3 weeks, but it will depend on the coaches mindset as if he calls him up we have no say really.
