Arteta

He's not won anything of note but all the top clubs have spent silly money. Look at man utd for example. He's clearly a very good manager and I'd be very surprised if arsenal dont win the league this year
You're right they all do it. But even Utd have won honours in the last 7 years.

I would also agree with you that they should win it this year but with Arteta at the helm I wouldn't be counting my chickens just yet. City seem to be going under the radar (and Arsenal still have to play at the Etihad).

And so it should be given the amount of money he's spent. He's done nothing noteworthy given his resources. I'll ask you one question - do you think he's overachieved or underachieved (bear in mind his resources / trophy cabinet and the expectations at a club the size of Arsenal).
Most Arsenal fans think he has overachieved based on the many down here I am surrounded by.

Arsenal are probably the 5th biggest side in English football behind City, United, Chelsea and Liverpool. All those teams have spent as much money on their squads as Arsenal have.

He’s consistently got them into the top 2, and they look like they will win the league for the first time in 20 years.

I think he's a good guy and a good manager. Arsenal could do much worse than Arteta given what we have seen Chelsea, Man U, and Tottenham go through in manages since Arteta has been in charge. Very smart and really classy in interviews but just horrible on the sideline. I guess he is just competing in his own way, but I much prefer RLB's gentleman approach.

Overachieved... That's interesting because I just did a quick search (may not be reliable) but it seems Arsenal are the 4th biggest spenders over the last 10 years (of your list only Liverpool have a net spend less, the other 3 were the ones with a higher net spends) and yet Arsenal's average position over that same timeframe is 4th. So that would suggest they're on par with expectations rather than overachieving.

Another metric to measure his success (or not) would be silverware. During that same 10 year period they've won the least amount of trophies out of the 5 mentioned teams. In fact, Arteta has only won one more trophy (a community shield) more than Palace (with a significantly less budget) during his 7 year tenure. He certainly isn't overachieving.

He’s obviously a talented coach but of the two men leading their sides from the touchline today, I’m having Le Bris. Decent, calm, measured, humble and bright. Arteta behaved like a spoilt bairn throughout the entire match and I’m not having the ‘it’s because he’s a winner’ or ‘he’s passionate’ stuff. He just behaves poorly.

A very fair assessment.

In the last 3 seasons they have finished 2nd, and it looks like they will win the league this year.

Top sides measure success by winning the PL or Champions League. No one talks about Liverpool’s UEFA cup under Houllier…

He was quite complimentary in the post match interview. He admitted we were his toughest challenge so far. This is becoming nuts.
And can you then believe that 3 years ago we were losing to Cheltenham 2-1 in a league game.

The turn around since then is nothing short of amazing, I just genuinely don't see how anyone can replicate it

Sorry mate but your posts are juxtaposing because you're absolutely right top teams are measured by winning these trophies yet how many of those has Arteta won? None. So how can he be overachieving?

"It looks like they will win it this year" doesn't count until they do because I would argue Man City (especially if they win today) would be the favourites because they have the experience of winning it, still have Arsenal to play at home, and have a striker that can put the ball in the net.

I didn’t say they were measured by winning trophies, I said they were measured by winning the league or the champions league. Arsenal haven’t won any yet, but as you said yourself, they have the 4th net spend, and they’ve finished 2nd 3 years in a row, about to be a 4th time if they fail to win it this year.

That feels like he’s at least delivering on expectations to me. Are you saying he needs to win a league cup or two and that would all of a sudden flip it to overachieving?
