Sunderland railway station.

How close to capacity is Sunderland Station and the track from Pelaw to Sunderland?
The station (and lack of platforms) is the real pinch point. Only having (effectively) 2 platforms is an issue - which could be solved by re-opening one or both of the old platforms behind the light wall.

The track itself only has a max of 8 trains per hour in each direction (max of 6 metro, 1 northern and 0.5 Grand Central) with the occasional cargo service. Although Nexus/NECA are currently holding to the line that it’s at max capacity ….. but they’ve wrong and they tried the same with every extra GC service we put on between 2010-2020. They just don’t want to lose footfall for NCL.

Then what is the actual capacity between Sunderland and Pelaw.

Easily 10p/hr from the last study I remember.

That’s six minutes per track section. Comfortable. Plus, I would expect that the new metros have got better signalling equipment that the old ones so a new assessment would likely see that number increase. I’m fairly sure (although it’s going back a few years) that the older signalling systems in the old trains necessitated longer gaps between services.

Track capacity was never Nexus’ best argument when trying to stop GC increasing services to Sunderland - abstraction was, although we still bear that - but it didn’t stop them throwing everything they could at trying to protect NCL.

Thank you 👍

Can't comment on exact numbers, but it's severely limited. A very recent study says there's only 1 freight path available, an hour, with the Metro's going up to 6 TPH.

It's on P37, in here -

It's also about how to deal with the ECML issues, for those interested in that - someone posted it on another forum.

The same parochial bastards who put black stripes on the front end of the old Metrocars, and only put yellow in the middle because they had to, for track worker visibility reasons.

Make no mistake, they're black and white stripes hidden in plain sight.

Hiding them was not something they had to worry about for the godawful treatment of Central Station.

Fuck them all.

I’ve told this story on here before - but I was representing Arriva when I it was ordered to take the operating contract by Deutsche Bahn after it was acquired by them …. As part of that I had regular meetings with Nexus.

There had been some complaints from customers on the Shields line about stations there being redecorated in predominantly in black and white. The comments were partly football loyalty based but also from people who didn’t want to see a public transport facility done out in the colours of any football team.

The Engineering Director looked me dead in the eye and, totally dismissing the reasonable comments about the ‘footballification’ of a public transport asset, said “that’s so you Mackem bastards know who’s in charge”.

I was gobsmacked at his lack of professionalism (which I told him) and I reminded him that I was there to represent Arriva and the German Federal State. He shut up after that and tried to downplay it afterwards.

That’s an example of the sort of attitude the mags in charge of this region’s transport has.

Disgraceful.

Embarrassing that they feel the need to gp on like this and they're so institutionally insecure.

Surprised he didn't pull out "yas lost tha wor"

Sounds like a childish prick. Should have been sacked for that. Putting football loyalties ahead of what should be a customer focused service. Tosser.

Fighting these with one arm tied behind our backs.

100%.

The fact the they are responsible for transport in Tyne AND Wear yet were objecting to extra services to Sunderland which weren’t going to cost them a penny (and we had proven we’re not primarily abstractive, meaning they weren’t simply taking passengers away from existing services but were generating new ones) shows the mentality.

Nexus understands how crucial national rail links are to the economic development of a city and they were determined to do everything possible to stop Sunderland having a tiny taste of that.

They still are.

He’ll of had his mag fluffers laughing along and them all thinking there’s nothing wrong with it

A lot to be said for this administration but he's a very good MP
He's is one of Starmer's loyalists and e.g. he voted for Kendall's vicious attack on the sick and disabled bill - so I'd say he was another centrist patsy, dumped on us by Labour HQ.

I applaud him on this issue though.

No new MP will ever vote against the government, watched something with Rory Stewart who talked about how the whips work and as a new MP you just can't

Not saying I agree with the system but that's the reality

Aye as much as I’d rather he voted against the winter fuel and welfare cuts, the winter fuel was one of the first main votes. He’s never realistically going to do that. He’s done a good job, always prominent in the city and been involved in a couple of high profile selection committees.

Done more for Sunderland than Chris Mullin. Who seemed only to be interested in social injustices. Fair enough but when your MP spends his entire time defending say the Birmingham six, it was detrimental to his own constituency. Wrote to Mullin about the railway station and he could not have cared less, at least that is how it came across. Tbf, that was the days of Labour putting a monkey up and would have been voted in. Came across as an intellectual snob, better than the thickos who voted him in. Give me the new bloke over Mullin, Hodgson or Bridgit Phillipson, at least he gets Sunderland. Might prove me wrong but time will tell.

'better than the thickos who voted him in' - very subjective!?!
I agree with your comments of our own two MPs though

Oh dear where to start. Dumped on us? Hes a local bloke whose worked his way into politics and clearly wants to make a difference to his local area. Vicious attack? Welfare system does need reforming PIP system is a joke! Know loads of people rinsing it. Dont even get me started on the mobility car system. If you blindly support pouring billions into welfare then you are on cloud cuckoo land and to blame for this country being such a soft touch

As someone said search BMW mobility and tells you everything that is wrong with the scheme.
