Matt Young - Thoughts from a Salford Fan

I agree. I saw hm play for Darlington against Blyth Spartans and was amazed at how good he was. Even at that age, he had an aura about him. It's hard to describe, just calm, commanding, authoritative and decisive. He claimed crosses, came off his line, passed it around. I've never seen a young keeper like it to be honest.

Yep exactly what I saw too.
You try not to get too carried away but it was one of those moments where you think ‘bloody hell, that kid’s going to make it’!

Realistically, let’s say we hold on to Roefs for a couple of seasons, get Young out on loan to a championship club next season…

I’m assuming he’s still doing well at Salford?
 
I think he’s at a great place for his future development, and next year presuming. Salford go up, I’d say a season league 1 at 19 will do the lad no harm at all.

There should be no expectation that he will be ready to challenge for a PL spot until 21, and even then, that’s incredibly early, Pickford only got that opportunity at 21/22 because of how bad we were.
 
It's a tricky one with us regarding keepers as the ROOOOF! is exceptional and it is going to be a case of how long we can keep him and at what price we would/could sell for (Would 50 or 60 million be around the figure given his age as well as his ability and also that he is outstanding with the ball at his feet , which the top clubs all look for nowadays) Patterson is in a strange situation as he played well and helped us up last season but no bids so far, and then we have this lad and other youngsters who we will be blooding through the system over the next few years .

I would be made up if we could keep ROOOOF! for the next 2 seasons and watch his get better and his value rocket. I would be more made up if he spent his entire career with us and we were right at the top but I am trying to be realistic in some way.

This, there is a lot to be said about the stability of staying there as well. Supportive environment that know him well and a manger that already has faith in him. We should be telling him and Salford that if they go up we'll happily sent him back there next year as well.

Re: Roefs it wouldn't really matter how much we'd want for him (if we have/had a plan to sell him on to promote Young), but how desperate other clubs are to pay for him.

If Man United are flapping about still, we could make them overpay. If it's Liverpool viewing him as a potential replacement for Alisson, then they won't be overpaying.

If he keeps up his early form then we should be expecting atleast £30m. If some mad fuckers come in desperate for a keeper then we should add another £10m+ on to that.

No chance 30 million in my mind. We got that for pickford years ago as a club that had been relegated man!

He needs game time just like Pickford and unlike Patto who waited too long (not saying it was his decision like) to go get proper games. He’d be a better keeper by now if he had.

I suspect Patto will be away Jan or the summer and we’ll bring a fabianski type in and keep loaning young out for when we inevitably sell Roefs for 100m
 
How old was Pickford when he was number 2? I remember him as a kid, probably the best young keeper I've seen.

I know Given was class when he was here, but the game has moved on a lot and Pickfords distribution was absolutely incredible along with being an excellent goalkeeper at such a young age.

Admittedly I've seen nothing of Young at this point but he sounds like an excellent prospect.
