Mercury Music awards 2025 in Newcastle

Why are we giving this prize to someone who's selling out stadiums currently? I couldn't give a shite that he supports Newcastle or how good/bad the album is. Hate that the likes of Fender, Fontaines, Monkeys, Charli xcx and Harry Styles have all been part of the nominations in the last few years never mind one of them winning it.

English Teacher got a massive shift in ticket sales and streaming numbers after they won last year and that should be the goal every year with this award. Promote talented smaller British acts.
I always thought this award was aimed at new upcoming artists

Imagine our Frankie Francis response! 😤 The fringe bands around the places in the build up to this fixed shit-show have been better than Fender’s inane dross 🥱 Bedtime

Give owa he’s never won it has he?

He’s good at what he does for the audience he courts but originality? Musical craft? Lyrics? Arrangement? It’s paint by numbers music IMO.

I suppose a worthy winner for an event now held in a soulless corporate air hanger. Can’t imagine Robert Wyatt performing there at all

Saving grace is that it's the second Northern act in a row to win after what feels like decades of London dominance so I am quite glad about that. Hopefully makes a difference in some way going forward.

What a crock of shit. All credibility out of the window
It had very little anyway. An award that one has to pay to be considered as a potential winner ffs!
Anyway this was, in my opinion anyway, the least surprised I have been for a long while.

Imagine chanting Newcastle football chants at a music awards ceremony. Sad sportswashed clowns. So many better albums on the list than this bland unimaginative dirge. A desperate PR stunt by the once credible Mercury Music prize.

Some jealousy going on here mind.
I couldn't give a flying feck about these awards, but there seems to be an agenda against Fender on here.
The Mercury has always been about more niche output, not really mainstream stuff. It feels a little bit like a sell out...

No way would have won had this competition being hosted anywhere else. Seriously gone downhill and made meaningless over time. It was supposed to be about supporting and promoting up and coming bands who pushed musical boundaries. What we’ve got is a winner who might as well of wrote all his material using AI but instead was manufactured to sell out stadiums using a vanilla recipe even Ed Sheeran is jealous of.
