Favourite Durham CCC players you've actually seen

I take it you're not wholly familiar with the legendary Alex Coxon. Great though they were they pale into insignificance compared to early 20 th century swing bowler Alf Morris also of Sunderland CC.
The thread though is conditional on "those you've actually seen".
Alec Coxon used to take us for net sessions at Ch le St on a Wednesday night in 1977.

Ive been trying to do this but there are too many to mention. So just a few beginning from he FC era -

Dean Jones
Wayne Larkins
Ian Botham
Simon Jones
Steve Harmison
Paul Collingwood
DiVa
Ottis Gibson
Shoaib Akhtar
Rushy
Ben Stokes
Mark Wood
Banks

They are off the top of my head but there'll be loads ive missed out.

Agree - As far as favourites are concerned I would add the likes of John Hastings, Paul Parker and David Graveney to my XI. I remember Graveney used to walk around the ground every home game chatting to the members and often getting buttonholed....imagine that happening now.

We've only been 1st class for a generation and the current team is the best of that generation.Heard that from the very top.
Compare our, current bowling attack with those listed in this thread

Coached Gordon Muchall and others at South Shields circa 1995. Coxon was then 80_year old.

Have only watched DCCC sporadically over the years, mainly in the early days at the Racecourse Ground/Gateshead Fell/Stockton..

Larkins
Stoneman
Boon (c)
Collingwood
Stokes
Botham
Mustard (w)
Wood
Harmison
Rushworth
Brown

Probably need a spinner. Couldn't think of one, other than David Gravney

I would go for something like;

DiVenuto
Jennings
Borthwick
Collingwood
Stokes
Mustard (wk)
Blackwell
Raine
O Gibson
Wood
Rushworth

That's allowing for 2 overseas and the exclusion of mags (with the exception of Wood as he claims to be a Wimbledon fan).

If we are going favourite players then I'm going with. Diva. Jennings. Benks. Clarky. Stokes. Will Smith. Mustard. Blackwell. Rushworth. Thorp. Raine. (Not sure if Thorp was classed as overseas but I'm throwing him in). Always liked Michael Richardson so he would be sub wicketkeeper
I have footage of a very drunken me singing "Thorpy's one of us" in Austins the night we won our 1st CC. So there it is, he's one of us, not an overseas ;)

Always like Callum Thorp, always gave 100% and incredibly useful with the bat and when he hit it.... wow  . Still works at the club now and you couldn't wish to meet a nicer fella, always got time to speak to people.

Aye he was spot on, lovely fella, looked a bit embarrassed when I've looked back at the footage, he stilled laughed like. Yep I think he was underrated, not by the players mind. Will Smith was a great lad too, although that might have been as I may have abused his bar tab a couple of times. In fact all the players that night were great, except one. Great night mind.

Will Smith such a great bloke. Many years back my now wife wasn't with me at the game and a few players were asking (we used to sit near the dressing room steps in our early times watching Durham together) anyway she was in having a big operation which the players got to hear about and Will Smith ended up sorting a signed card (he was her fav player). Always made time to come and speak to us and she's got a few of his shirts including a 2013 title winning shirt. I've said hello to him a few times since he left (match referee) but last year at Taunton he was match referee and he instantly recognised us both and walked straight over asking how we were etc. One of those players we both think highly of. Was always happy to help/have a chat etc just a good bloke

Lovely story of a lovely fella mate.

Was it a Family Affair 🤔
Well I can't remember the youngest being there (possibly was), but it was busy, and I was mullered. To be fair, I could have been as arsey with us if I was Mr H that night like. But the rest of the squad were great (and p*ssed), singing, signing my hat etc. Mitch Claydon was also a really sound lad. The night soured a touch when I specifically told my mate NOT to get Roger Thames' autograph on my hat when I went to the bog. Came back to find that he had, as big as it could possibly be on a white DCCC floppy hat. The bald twat!
