Rush: Fifty Something Tour

I love power windows but I wouldn’t recommend it for someone listening for the first time.

Got to be Permanent Waves or Moving Pictures.

After listening to it again all the way through, you're probably right.

I dunno, Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures are kind of transition albums as they're leaving the purely prog era, Signals is all over the place, then they really find their "synth era" feet with Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows, Hold Your Fire, Roll The Bones... Counterparts starts off with them showing they've been listening to Rage Against The Machine but then gets a bit tame after the first couple of banging tracks... Test For Echo has incredible production and pretty great songs and is probably the start of the "final era".

Ehhh

After great deliberation I'm going to stick my neck out with Grace Under Pressure.

The first album of theirs that grabbed me as a whole album and made me realise I was a Rush fan. Every other album of theirs that I've grown to love stemmed from that.

All the worlds a stage was my introduction to them, then I liked everything up to and including moving pictures. Then I kinda cooled a bit.

I felt sorry for Alex as he struggled to find himself as more keys came into their sound.

My entire Rush knowledge is taken from this episode
What is it like?
I was listening to an interview with Feeder front man Grant Nicholas and he was banging on about being a big fan of Rush, what would be a good album or two to check out? I'm not working through 19 studio albums
2112, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures.

Everything that sums Rush up is on those three albums. It's the band at their best, and their most accessible. And with the first half of 2112 you've got one of their best and fully realized prog set pieces as well.

After that go with Farewell to Kings.

Totally agree. Maybe with the addition of Hemispheres.

Shame that's there's no UK shows.
@mickb2112 reckons they're coming.

I see they've already double up on their itinerary over there (also noticed people are going mad about the prices).

I never quite clicked with Hemispheres. I dunno if it's maybe a bit too short on song. Through The Trees is excellent and among my favourites.

I can actually live without La Villa Strangiato (An Exercise In Self Indulgence)...that's exactly what it is!

The lad who told me the news 3 weeks ago and correctly named Anika Nilles, knew the Tour Manager of the band we were seeing that night. The TM knows people in the Rush camp and he told him, and then he told me. He also said there`d be a multiple night residency at a London venue.

Don`t think they will be doing an extensive tour or anything, just London and a couple of major cities in Europe.

He`s been right so far so here`s to hoping.

Nice one. London suits me. Easy enough on the train. plenty accomo.

I'd assume it'll be the dome.

Did you ever hear owt more on the Lizzy front?

Tickets don`t go on sale until 13th do they?? How come some places are saying low availability - resale sites who don`t actually have the tickets yet????

I quite fancy doing multiple nights if they play a few shows in London.

Heard nothing more about Lizzy - there was going to be an announcement but that ended up being the Nighlife box set. Maybe they could be added to Stonedead Festival next summer??

They way Geddy and Alex were talking, it sounded as though the set might change from night to night.

Maybe the moment's past for Lizzy. I think Ricky's got a couple of other things going on with the Almighty and another band he's in, and Scott's been doing his art thing.

I've never liked his voice in isolation but it complemented the music

Permanent Waves was my favourite Rush album until quite recently and I prefer Moving Pictures now
For me the period from permanent Waves to Hold Your Fire was my favourite era. Of course I love their 70`s stuff too but I find I listen more to the 80`s period - maybe that was the time I was buying these albums on the day of release. I did drift away a little from Presto onwards but do like those albums but not as much as what went before. Thought they finished strongly with Snakes and Arrows and Clockwork Angels.

The band struggled with that song for years (LVS). They could not record it in one take let alone play it live. But such is their musicianship that they finally mastered it.

I think the latter stages of Neils life are so tragic it makes me quite sad and it affects how I listen to their later albums less as a result.

For their new shows I think adding a new drummer and a keys player is a great idea.

It’s not overtly replacing Neil it’s something new.

Do you know if they will be playing new material too?
