The argument about someone from Pennywell not using the railway station to go to Durham equally applies going to Newcastle. Loads do, despite being a bus service from Hastings Hill roundabout or the metro at South Hylton. I know if I lived in Pennywell, bus into town metro / train Newcastle. If you haven't got a car, to get to Durham, think you have to get to the 35, 20 route which takes an hour to get to Durham, a 30 minute train/metro would be a much better choice. Aint going to happen but still think why two cities relatively close not having a decent connection is a real pity.If you want better links from Sunderland then you need to improve the links within Sunderland first. You could have a teleporter from Durham to Sunderland Station but most people still won't use it because getting to Sunderland station involves doubling back ie. if you lived in Pennywell, by the time you get to the station in the first place you'd already be in Durham via car. It doesn't help the route of the Metro which they're proposing to use for the Washington line manages to avoid most the city either.
The Northumberland Line is different as it links suburbs to the local city - a completely different type of line.

You can't go direct on the bus to Durham from shiney and now only 1 bus to Sunderland its f***ing abysmalAye get that, the Metro is every 12 minutes though. Not sure you'd ever get that frequent to Sunderland so if you missed a train it would be a pain in the arse.
I know it not in the centre of the city, but I always think it's a shame that there's been nothing been built at Shiney Row. For someone from places like Pennywell, Doxford Park etc it would be a hell of a lot easier to connect there, similar for those for those in Fencehouses etc. Hop on a bus to there, then Metro direct to Sunderland, including the stadium or Newcastle rather than having to go all the way to Heworth or for Sunderland, I'm not even sure how you'd get there tbh.
Even places like Chester Le Street etc would be better if the connections existed.
Being selfish living in SE Northumberland, it's a nightmare to travel anywhere down that way and I know someone who lives down there aswell.
Just been to York and back on Grand Central . Its a nice journey to be fair. Coastal views on the way. Sunderland Station downstairs is still a bloody disgrace that shames the City. They need to panel the dark walls and make it brighter.as many are saying . Im sure you wont see The Mayor McGunness or B . Arrived around half 8 and there was 4 lads slumped all over the chairs drinkingThe security guard was just stood on his phone!
On the return journey the platform was packed for the Kings X GC train. The platform areas are just awful, full of fumes and zero daylight.
The whole place is an embarrassment considering the money pumped into it.

What the hell was the point of the millions spent on the Entrance and the empty concourse ?? . If we were in the running for "Ugliest Station in the UK." , we would smash it. Lift still not working at the south end by the way. Northern Rail get your fingers out.
Why would northern or network rail pay for this , it's a private property
Thats the issue , the money is not available for a small station that's not on the main lines.
The hope is the council can manage to get the other 2 platforms open but if northern don't feel it's financially worth it , it won't happen

The ownership and upkeep of Sunderland railway station is the responsibility of Network Rail.
I'd imagine the cosmetic side of it will be Northern though (which is what people have a problem with).
They definitely run the station.
Not that it makes much difference mind they're all government owned now anyway.
I'd imagine any new platforms etc will be partially Nexus tbh as it'll be the Metro who will benefit from it.

It's not a shame its a scandal! Most of our journeys will be southern so makes sense to go through durham and not north to go south. This would impact the mag economy though and they won't have thatThe lack of rail connectivity between Durham and Sunderland is a shame.Most of the rationale of the Beeching era cuts has been shown to be flawed and focused on road transport. Could the Metro not be expanded along the old route?
The platform area is absolutely awful. If London can have bright underground stations why not Sunderland?
