Weapons (2025)
Really enjoyed it, a bit different to usual type of horror film. Thought it was entertaining throughout. 8/10

Naked Gun (2025)
A bit too stupid, not really very funny either. 4/10
I gave Naked Gun a whirl after seeing the trailer, it wasn't terrible but I turned it off after about half an hour. Might just not be for me mind as I haven't seen the original.

The Lawnmower man 1992. Again don't want to spoil for anyone but think what might happen if a very simple man becomes that enriched with knowledge he becomes more than reality. Quite bonkers and certainly a very long filum, well over 2 hours, 7/10 for me, factoring everything in.

Flow (2024) 9/10
Latvian animated feature. A cat, a ring-tailed lemur, a secretary bird, a capybara, and a retriever band together to survive after a catastrophic flood. Made on a budget, but genuinely inventive and beautiful.

What Does That Nature Say to You (2025) 8/10
Latest from Hong Sang-soo, the Korean Richard Linklater. An aspiring poet gives his girlfriend a lift to her family home, and ends up staying for a day and a night. Slow moving, lots of chat, food, and drink. Small revelations are made, but enough - perhaps - to change the course of a relationship.

Following (2024) 6/10
A Seoul estate agent gets his kicks going into his clients' homes and finding out about their lives. One client is a famous influencer; he enters her home and finds her dead in a pool of blood. All the evidence points the police towards him. So-so thriller without any sympathetic characters to get invested in.

TPTV effort…

The Embezzler (1954)

Charles Victor is a meek chief cashier married to a nagging old trout. He gets told he has less than two years to live, so he lifts the contents of a vault and goes on the run. First stop - Eastbourne, where he stays in a hotel full of characters. He begins to get involved in their affairs, giving his life some vague meaning.

Curious little film, this one. The tone is comedic in places. However, there’s an undercurrent of tragedy that it can’t shake, Yet, we also see the redemption to be found in simple everyday actions. There’s a warmth to the story and characters that shines, despite its simplistic B movie status. Victor plays his role with nuance and affection, and Cyril Chamberlain is great as a sleazy manipulative turd.

A nice way to spend an hour. It’s nothing special, but it’s endearing.

6.5/10

The original naked guns weren't for everyone either, just really daft humour which at times i like but a lot I don't find funny at all. The remake was either absolutely shite or that sort of film just isn't funny any more

Relay [2025] 5/10
A frustrating misstep from David Mackenzie, who I like a lot (Hell or High Water, Under the Banner of Heaven). Good potential in the first half even though it fails to fully commit to it's 70s paranoia roots. It falls apart VERY badly in the final act with a laughable action pivot.

Ferris Bueller is an insufferable prick, isn't he?
There's a funny that he's stuck in a time loop like Groundhog Day which seems to explain a lot of the film's contrivances (although I haven't actually seen it for about 20 years). Might explain why he's a prick as well.

La Belle Époque (2019) 9/10
High-concept, Charlie Kaufmanesque romantic comedy starring French legends Daniel Auteuil and Fanny Ardant as a married couple no longer in love. A company of actors using an old movie studio offer clients the opportunity to immerse themselves in the time period of their choosing. Auteuil decides to revisit the cafe in which he met his wife in 1974. Excellently done.

The Count of Monte Cristo (2024) 9/10
Superb French adaptation of the Dumas novel.

Les Miserables (1934) 10/10
Directed by Raymond Bernard, one of the most underrated French directors (his film Wooden Crosses is one of the greatest WWI films ever made). This adaptation of the Victor Hugo novel runs for five hours, but never drags.

I always find your selections too high brow.

Can you review Porkies please?
