Essex v Durham County Championship 8-11 Sept

so we have gained on sussex, yorkshire and hampshire.

It’s the hope that kills you…
Rain got us out of jail there. I really hope they bring in an overseas bowler for the remaining 2 games, we need to somehow find a way to take 20 wickets.

Where’s Wagner?
It sounds like Essex are wanting to get Killeen on loan for the remaining two games ahead of his permanent move according to the stream today, if that gets the go-ahead and Minto still with Eng-u19s then we are looking at the same attack next Monday.

If the club let a fellow relegation fighting team have one of our players during this time then whoever makes the decision should never be near the running of any sporting club ever again.
One for the record books - the weather saves Durham.

It’ll balance out over the remaining two games.

Perhaps but the criticism was mainly aimed at those players who we know are talented but are consistently having poor games …not just a poor game. We know we have some average players like most counties our expectations of them are less than those representing their countries and those aspiring to join them
Yeh,if you consider our top batting order it's probably one of the strongest in the country yet several are consistently under performing and whilst Raine and Potts are top bowlers it was obvious back up was required pre-season yet this wasn't addressed. Perfectly natural for supporters to question this. A lack of vocal support on the field together with this underperformance not unnaturally leads to suspicion that all is not great between players and management.
Perhaps these comments on lazy criticism would be understood if there was rational offered for such a comment. Everyone is entitled to their opinions but they don't have much validity without any justification being offered for them.
It's behaviour likened to a troll.

The weather forecast is shit next week
This is the game they have to win and judging by the forecast we won’t get chance too

Well it's an away draw which on paper 12 points I think we got isn't too bad and we've gained on some and with Hampshire dragged into it, I'm "satisfied" with the outcome this week. However the performance simply wasn't good enough once again.

As I said after the 1st innings, it's always the case 1 or 2 contribute at the top, then we expect Clark to bail us out or carry us a bit further in hope a tailender can stick about. Clark has done this job very well to be fair, so again no blame attached to him. The top order though need to be better, Lees aside it's very inconsistent and it's simply not good enough. Gay is yet to convince me that he's good enough. Bedingham has had a shocking season, Ackermann since about the 3rd round of games has been very poor, Mckinney very inconsistent and Robinson hasn't been right for a good year plus now again inconsistent. Only Lees and Clark and provided consistency.

Bowling wise, I said at the start of the season we are short and recruitment has been poor, that has proven to be the case. Why on earth was Killeen playing 2nd team cricket this week I'd be curious to know, he's still our player, so bloody play him. Potts I think is averaging something like 35 this season which is concerning, he missed a lot of chances earlier this season to play and England need blaming for that. However I've said this loads on here, the bowling setup at Durham is clearly poor and that blame lies with the coaching/conditioning people, so many injuries is just not bad luck, they're doing something wrong and obviously stats speak for themselves (Raine excluded), the coaching/intention from the coaches simply isn't working... stats prove that and when we have a decent young lad showing promise, we piss him about to the point he's decided to leave... genius. More scrutiny needs to be aimed at Onions, he's getting a very easy ride.

Again sounding like a broken record... sorry.... but the body language has been shite for a good while. There is no banter/chat/encouragement in the field when things aren't going well, we need a voice and a leader. Lees is a superb cricketer but he's not a captain and some of the decision making this season has left be completely baffled. I said at the time and I'll say it again, Ben Raine should be captain and he remains my choice.

Marcus North needs to leave, something I have consistently said for years, along with Bostock, both in it for themselves and their franchise dream. Recruitment has been crap, let's be honest here and that blame for me lies with North who is director of cricket. The Killeen situation still annoys me whilst we are offering Aldridge and Bailey 3 year pro deals, sorry but that stinks.

Bostock, less said the better, he has no time for members, I'll leave it at that, he just annoys me.

Two massive games coming up, with Sussex playing Yorkshire and Hampshire having Somerset away and Surrey at home, the pressure is on several times.

Just hope we survive but some players really need to step up and show some fight and desire because I've not seen that enough in the last few months and it's a major concern.

Well done to Potts and Raine for that effort this afternoon. Rain has saved us today which I'm so happy about but many questions need to be asked and team selection next week will be interesting.

I'd bring Killeen in for Connors and I'd bring Rhodes in for Ackermann. Also this new fella we signed surely has to play, otherwise why sign him, so for that reason alone he should be in for Parkinson.

My “second” team. They’re the closest club to me and I try get down to Grace Road a few times a year.

Was hoping to watch Durham play there next season by hey ho.
Yeah me too.....grew up in Leicsetershire before moving to North Tyneside in 1974. They had a great side back then under Ray Illingworth,... Brian Davison, Barry Duddleston , Jack Birkenshaw, Chris Balderstone, Roger Tolchard etc then a few years later the likes of Gower, James Whittaker, Peter Willey

In the 1990s you could always rely on Leics to absolutely hammer Durham every season. I've said this before but there was one game at Durham Racecourse in 1994 when Wells took a hat trick in the 1st innings and Sheriyar took another in the 2nd.

Relegation rivals Hants and Yorkies have signed Sundar and Mayank on short term contracts for final games. Clearly there are quality overseas signings available. Well now, over to you Mr North.

My gut feeling is that given the points differences and the range of fixtures yet to be played plus the vagaries of the weather we will wriggle out of it.

We probably don't deserve to over the course of the season but considering all of the factors that are still to brought in to play its not out of the question that one of our immediate rivals could yet be dealt a really bad hand.

I admit that's not based upon a very scientific analysis but if I was relying on that approach we would be down already.

Just asking the question here, but ..... is the problem with Potts that he is being underbowled? I mean, he goes away with England and carries the drinks. Maybe he's the type who needs to bowl regularly. I'm actually hoping he doesn't get his central contract renewed!

I can’t think of any other sport where weather affects individual games and potentially the outcome of a league than cricket. It is part of the game’s charm I suppose but imagine having to chase 120 in 20 overs v Yorkshire to retain first division status and to come off for bad light.

I’m confident that our ‘great leaders’ would welcome poor weather on Monday afternoon/evening so that some people just can’t be arsed hanging around for the Members meeting.

I’ve suggested this in the past. Potts to me is the sort of bowler who when he was first picked for England would bowl 5/6 balls in an over in the same place and relied on marginal movement for his wickets/chances. He wasn’t a ‘shock’ bowler. Early this season he was just bowling, as someone sat near me once said, bouncer shit. I agree he needs to bowl more than he does. Has he improved a bit in the last couple of games? If the weather is cooler and damp for the next two games, he has a massive part to play.

I think this is because cricket is pretty much unique in the way the result is determined.

There are games that are played to a finish, in principle even if that takes forever (such as tennis and baseball). And there are games that are played to a specific time period, and then call the result at the end of that time period based on who is winning at that point (such as every version of football). I cannot think of another sport that does half one and half the other the way cricket does, so that there is a set time, but if you haven’t finished at that point they just call it a draw.

It is undoubtedly part of cricket’s unique charm, but it can be bloody infuriating as well.
