Isidor / Haiti

Seems like none of the players are actually based in Haiti and they play their home games on another island, Curacao.

Quick google shows they have a chance to qualify for next year’s world cup so maybe not such an odd choice 🤷🏻‍♂️

Curacao is practically the Netherlands; pretty nice place. It's close to Venezuela, so I'd advise Wilson not to take any boat trips.

It’s been all over the news for the last year?
Sadly, it’s quite regularly featured in the news, going back to the brutal regime of Papa Doc and, of course, the terrible 2010 earthquake.
I suspect if you asked 50 random people in the street where Hispaniola is and which two countries share it, it wouldn't be seen as basic common knowledge
Seriously?

Maybe people are more dummed down these days? I would say anyone with half decent general knowledge should know.

Obviously not very good at quizzes these people.
I suspect you knowing it has clouded your view on how common that knowledge is.

There will be things you know that most others don’t, and things most people know that you don’t.

Out of interest, would you expect people to know where Borneo is and which nations share it? Or for people to be able to identify on a map and name all of the Caribbean islands?

I have been to at least a dozen Carribbean islands including the Dominican Republic and Dominica and no I couldn't find all of them on an unmarked map. I could probably find Cuba, Jamaica and Hispaniola because they are large islands.

Hiati has been in the news for donkeys years. Doc and Baby Doc Duvalier and the Tomtom Macute ruling with an iron fist, mass killings and lots of corruption.

It's been in the news a lot recently through the lawlessness of the place. Perhaps some people live under a rock whereas I don't.

I think @woodlebert is correct. I've been to Central America and the Caribbean several times and am frequently asked questions about the area that I find strange.

oooh look at me

I've watched a few videos on it, what a mad and dangerous part of the world. I was surprised to learn it's next door to Dominican Republic which we thoroughly enjoyed when we went
probably play their home matches in DR if DR will have them ?

You’re saying you “probably” could find it on a map, and you (I think you said up thread) have been there

I don’t see why you would then expect it be common knowledge to find it on a map and know which countries inhabit it

I'm with @woodlebert. Plenty of people have heard of the Crimean War but not many of them could name the countries involved nor would they have know the recent history of how it became part of Ukraine. How many countries of the West Indies aren't islands.
