Anthony Patterson

I remember watching Patterson after we got promoted from L1 to Championship and being worried. Made some silly mistakes early into the season, but as the first season back in the Championship progressed, it was clear we had bigger issues in other areas of the pitch and there was improvement needed across the team.

Unfortunately the level of improvement from Patterson has not been consistent. For a young keeper, we should really be seeing enormous strides in his game season to season and last season in particular he had one major error in him every game. Now sometimes we’re cruising 2-0 up and then whoever is playing at the back fixes the situation but numerous times he’s made a cock up that has cost us a goal.

I thought he was decent at penalties and the shot stopping was improving, but as others have said there were areas of his game that were fragile and I was nervous in some situations when he was required to make big saves.

I feel sorry that Patterson is sitting on the bench for us after a MoTM performance at Wembley, but then I think back to those 3 Championship seasons - he was fine, maybe surprisingly good in the first season, one of the better lads in the second season but extremely error prone last season. He’s earning good wages and I reckon could still have a future at the club, he’s only 25 but needs to work hard on himself and fitness. Needs to command his area better. Kicking must improve. Would love to see him stay as second choice, but have a feeling some Championship or Scottish premier league teams might be interested next season, most likely a loan.

For the record - I think we’ll stay up hence why I’m saying next season he will head on a loan. A mistake to leave him leave for anything less than 10m considering how poor Trafford has been thus far for City - just watched the so called experts opinion on Trafford vs Brighton - calling him MoTM and barely did anything meaningful all game. Ridiculous and how much did they pay?

Patterson isn’t quite as good - but seriously £30m for Trafford - Patterson is 20-25m by that metric, he’s not that far behind him. Just watching Sunderland 1-0 Burnley from last season : look how nervous and poor Trafford was.
Yeah i agree he massively stagnated. Maybe that was down to no genuine competition for his place aswell but Roefs looks a level above

He has played almost 170 senior games here, had an uncontested shirt for 3 full seasons, and arguably hasn't improved whatsoever in that time.

He was superb in the final and I think that gives us a bit of recency bias and red and white tinted glasses in that respect, but I'd have been hoping we'd have looked to replace him this summer in the Championship, never mind the PL!

Statistically, he has been a middle of the road Championship goalkeeper for the last 3 seasons and is a fair assessment of where he's currently at.

Replaced him in the Championship? Give over. Whatever you come out with in terms of stats - there wasn't more than a couple of Championship keepers that were actually better than him or have been over the last few seasons. A lot of areas in goalkeeper can't be measured with an accurate stat.

He's clearly improved in three years as well, just maybe not enough in some of the areas we feel he's weaker and those would probably hamper him in the PL.

It’s a good point you make about the cup game. Given those lads that played would’ve been guaranteed to start in cup games, you’d think they’d bust their balls to make sure we go through.

whilst I completely get why people can't be arsed with cup games, we've seen the impact a good atmosphere can have on performances. A flat atmosphere often leads to flat performances. If we're all sat talking amongst ourselves against West Ham and Brentford, I dont think we're sitting on 6 points at this point.

He simply refused to work on his glaring weaknesses. His commanding of his area and distribution. It’s been a massive weak point from day one and it never improved in the slightest so he’s now not playing. That’s life.

He’s been a massive part of getting us to where we are, but look at Roefs distribution yesterday, and the management of his box, he’s a level up, no doubt about it.

Heads are ruling hearts at the club, it’s good to see.

Bit of himself to blame when he got sent on a fitness camp in the summer because he wasn't at the required standard
Has this actually been confirmed anywhere or just a rumour? Wouldn't be at all surprised as it was very clear last season that he wasn't in the best of physical nick.

Sub keeper is the cushiest job in footy.

One thing I don't understand is why Moore was warming up yesterday. He wasn't even in the squad. Third choice keepers should be helping to get the no.1 ready surely, not facing shots while Patto watches on.

Unfortunately ther are too many flaws in his game and apparant attitude.

Main issue is, and has always been, his distribution.
It is fuckin woeful man, especiay wth his feet.

Warming up so he can help with the warm up?

Have said similar. Was gutted for him but watching Roefs provide effectively another outfield outlet yesterday, it's the right decision.

I don't see him getting into another PL team for what it's worth, so IMO he's got a future decision as to whether he's content being a Steve Harper type figure (re: late 90s Mags) or if he wants to try and get himself in as #1 at a mid table champ side.

Danger is he makes the move and falls further down the leagues, given the frequent turnover of Championship managers.

He simply refused to work on his glaring weaknesses. Have a think about that and how daft it sounds.

As if the management team at SAFC during his time, the goalkeepering coaches etc won't have worked on those weakness and tried to improve them.

Some will only ever reach a certain level, regardless of how much they try. You or me have no idea how much effort he's put into it - yet you make him sound like a pub player. He's played almost 150 championship games and been capped by England U21. No one expected any of that when he went out to Notts County and we'd signed Hoffmann.
