Rail Forum Shows How Bad The UK is?

TDalt

Winger

A lot of people seem to have ADHD or “forget” or have “accidents” which sees them buy, coincidentally, cheaper tickets or use free passes. Sign of the times?

The ticket booking system is a bit of mess across operators and is usually a UI car crash, so I can see how it happens often. There's very little point in buying a ticket and pretending to have a railcard as you're likely to get checked at some point on your journey and the fines are large.
Alright for some. I forgot to tap into a station on the underground (the barriers were all open so must have just passed me by) but tapped out (even though again the barriers were open). Because there was only one transaction on the card I got charged the max daily allowance. I can't even skip fares properly!
You can go online and amend your journey and you'll get a refund within a day.

These reviews of that site will give you a good idea of what it is like. The moderator or owner would be an extremist even on the Politics Forum.

You can go online and correct things like that. No doubt, if you did it regularly, you would have problems.

I have posted a few things on RailForums in the past (not a train spotter, honest) but they have the strictest moderation I've ever seen. I've had warnings for all kind of trivial things.

I've seen other forums which let just about anything go. On balance, the SMB mods do a really good job.

Alright licky arse.

I've posted on there for almost 20 years (outing myself here like ) and never had a warning. However the owner and head mod is indeed heavy handed, condescending and getting worse.

The strict moderation however does make it an incredibly courteous and safe environment for what is an interest group with a lot of neurodivergent and vulnerable individuals. Anything remotely off topic, however interesting, is moved or deleted which is irritating. The reviews quoted upthread mainly relate to the owner and are probably people who've been banned from there for whatever reason. If I posted things I do on here I'd get banned too, and I agree the SMB is just about spot on.

The Disputes and Prosecutions forum there is different, as it's mostly inhabited with new members that have been caught fare evading and asking for help, which is always willingly given. To its credit, the forum helps each member to handle threats of prosecution without judgement and in good faith, even when bang to rights.

It does give a glimpse into a subset of the population that will try on both petty and large ticketing frauds and think nothing of it until caught and join up to beg for help. The forum also shows the cowboy, incompetent and heavy handed nature of railway companies' prosecution policies, even when people have made honest mistakes (though it's sometimes hard to tell how honest, which is part of the challenge).

Not sure either in itself indicates "how bad the UK is"!

Most of the warnings I've had have been over "incorrect posting style". Usually inserting a link but not giving a summary of the content

But yes, the heavy handed moderation of any comments which stray even slightly off topic is irritating and comments are either deleted or spun off into "Speculative Discussion"

...where they are roundly and scornfully mocked by grown men, who really should know better! There's a huge base of very intricate technical knowledge from extremely experienced people, which is why it's as good and as bad as it is, but God forbid you make a "crayonista" suggestion in Speculative Discussion

Yup. Make any suggestion about an improvement to a station, route or service and you will get a lecture on why it's an idiotic idea and wouldn't be possible.

I also hang out on the Flyertalk forum. That's possibly even more nerdy and the acronyms can be impossible to follow for the unimitated but it much more lightly moderated.

I mainly read the BA forum and occasionally post extremely well received witty pithy remarks rather than have much to add to the incredibly elite whinging of people who fly much more and much further up the plane than I do! But, YMMV as they say!

DYKWIA ...I'm GGL and the champagne was sub-par today!

Certainly since they cut the LPGS in the CCR

If I ever make it into the CCR I'm going to fill my boots whatever they serve.

Yes, the BA forum on Flyertalk can be entertaining and occasionally useful. The worst thing about FT is the ancient forum software they use.
