Keel Crossing [opened 18.10.25] - compendium thread

I had this with one on facebook the other day, they want shops building where that building has been knocked down at the front of town near the church. I said why when we have empty shop spaces all over town would we build more shop spaces to be empty. They’re really either dim or older and think the town will be like it was in the 80s. In town shopping has largely gone and won’t be coming back. There’s not only less chain stores to take over big plots now, everything has went online and most like to go to out of town shopping areas. Times have totally moved on yet loads on the internet will post and moan about eeeeee the town isn’t what it was there’s nowt there then jump in their cars to Newcastle or the metro centre. It’s the same lot that moan when the cinema shut because everyone was going to boldon or the metro centre and now we’ve got a state of the art cinema they won’t bother to support it but be the first one on moaning should it shut down.
Aye sad but true.
Holmeside is an absolute mess these days and I hope something is done at some point to turn it around but most attention right now seems to be around high street.
At one time Holmeside was the street with loads of clothes shops to suit every taste, from fashionable joints like Hodgson’s and West One to LS Defty for older ladies and Wilson Robinson for older gents. All gone.
As you say retail is on its arse and it’s not realistic that some magic wand will be saved and suddenly revive all those empty units but I can’t help wondering if the people moaning about the loss of those shops are the same people schlubbing around in tracky bottoms and crocs from Primark, bemused as to why upscale clothing shops have gone dark! It’s like someone who lives on burgers, kebabs and uber eats delivery moaning about why there isn’t a decent restaurant worth going to!

My original response was not in reference to the rugby event tbf, however my point still stands that mobile bars shipped in from outside the area are not necessary, and local people and local business should be supported before we set up a mobile bar in front of and within a minute’s walk from a dozen or so pubs
The mobile bars were run by the sponsor of the event

Aye someone mentioned it a while back here

There's a 'Welcome to the Stadium of Light" on the South East and North East corners but it now needs it on the South West (after the extension 😉) but it would be good if it was also lit up.

Keel Tavern had mobile bars set up. There were queues a mile long to get in. The Fure Station had mobile bars and their own food vendors outside too. All packed. They’ll have all made a fortune

I supposed that the mobile bars were all serving ale in plastic glasses - so we voted with our feet and The Peacock, The Dun Cow, The Canny Lad & The Cooper Rose etc cashed in.

Question for the locals - from someone who has parked in the exact same spot north of the river for the last 20 seasons.

With the new bridge, i'm thinking about parking down near Wild Fire for some lunch then walking over to the SoL that way. Is Keel Lane open and accessible or is it completely shut off until the new park is built? I presume the other route on foot would be up Farringdon Row, past the new car park, then onto Keel Crossing (once open).

Gill Bridge is currently shut.

There are double yellow lines down there now. An effort to get people to use the new car park I think.
