Keel Crossing [opened 18.10.25] - compendium thread

The SoL feels like it’s gone from being near the town, to in the town, whole place is looking fantastic, and is only going to get better. Well done everyone and anyone involved.
Agreed. Wish they’d done this when the millennium fund was giving out money back in the day as it’s going to make a big difference to the city for the positive.

Marra, walking past the corner of the south stand and then turning right towards St Peters, I never saw my feet for the half an hour that it took.
Did you notice anybody walking and avoiding big solid objects in front of you mate? Or was it just a long line of people banging their shins on stuff and falling over?

Looks absolutely class. Even better when they pave over the tarmac sections.

I’ve heard that Sunderland does a half marathon and 10k day - surely they now have to reconfigure the route so it goes over the bridge and includes Keel Square eh?

I think that's what they've done, I saw something about the rote the other week. I can't remember what site it was on though

Already starts and ends at Keel Square.

Ab OK - there’s absolutely no way they won’t go over the new bridge now surely?
The original emblem for the GNR was runners running over the Tyne Bridge. They could make the route go out over the Wear Bridge and back past the SoL over the Keel Bridge.

New 5k route added on the sat night which will be over the keel crossing

If they did it would be near the end. Would be too much of a bottleneck at the start.

The end would be better as people will be running away from the stadium, so the stadium will be the backdrop to the photographs.
Having the bridge at the start would mean the backdrop is office buildings.

I don't see a problem with congestion as the bridge is easily wide enough to take a few hundred runners.

Big telly in Keel Square getting taken away in September, absolutely nuts.

Can easily put a portable one up for special events etc. It's only really needed for the warmer weather and it'll block the view of the new Culture House.

There was 5k at the last one, and they're aiming for 6k in 2026.
