North Stand extension

its 48707 now, It must have added another 1000. it looks sh!te like
You'd think the south stand would look the same or it'll look odd. It went from 42000 to 48707, so you imagine the south stand will make capacity 55k'ish
Yeah that sounds about right. It'd probably be cancelled out if they decided to add the boxes in around the North Stand and remove the Black Cats bar I reckon.

The white metal cladding used instead of the brickwork is more irritating. Especially when (thankfully) brickwork was used for the North West Corner part of the extension, just daft they then decided to use cladding instead mixed with brickwork where the big black cats are.
Unless they were wanting to keep the West Stand as the stand out good looking main entrance.
It's hidden behind the swimming pool and sports hall now anyway, so would have been a waste.

I think I'd rather any extension to the South Stand be a single tier - making it a large home end.
That's what they should have done for the north. The top tier can't see the bottom, and vice versa. Kind of kills the big home end vibe.

I'd rather just have the south stand extension be an extra tier like the north stand. It will look better and be a lot cheaper to build. You can then just make the lower tier of the South Stand all safe standing if you want to get that big home end vibe and increase the radgey factor.

I wonder how many extra seats the North Stand would have if it had the same depth at the prem concourse there
It’s only about 6-7 rows and barely noticeable. But given the balcony hang over area is also about 6-7 rows and holds approx 1,000, the answer is probably that. Or slightly more given it would include a small bit of the North West Upper.

Maybe that’s why they did, they knew the pool was coming. Built in a shite place imo as the view of the ground was class coming down Keir Hardie way. That said the Beacon is also there now and I like the fact the city centre is expanding northwards meaning we will have a city centre located ground.

Also, no chance of a single tier end imo. That would mean no executive boxes and the club already think we don’t have enough.

You could do a pub crawl to the match.

Why was it not built with the same amount of rows as the Premier Concourse?
Probably down to viewing distance being longer to see the whole pitch length from the top of the north stand rather than shorter pitch width from the top of the West Stand.

These angles would therefore need to reduce the height the seats went up to with the roof position

Does anyone have any images of the outside of the North Stand pre-extension? Was thinking about how much the land behind has changed with the Aquatic Centre, the hotel and the Beacon and can remember cutting across that big field back towards Southwick clear as day but have no recollection of the outside of the North Stand pre-extension.

Obviously I know it was basically just a replica of the South Stand minus the overhang of the upper tier but still.

Don't know if this is what you're looking for:

Trying to post Alamy links but not working.

Go to their website, search Stadium of Light Sunderland, sort by the oldest date. 1st page has a muddy grassy field and then an aerial shot shows the ground with lots of space behind the north stand.

Best I can find off a quick search. Couldn’t see owt lower down that showed you, but you’re right, basically just the South Stand now. Was no Black Cats Bar either. Looks like that might be a giant queue for tickets snaking down the road and round road beside SEC if I’m judging that right. Would explain all the cars on a non matchday. Maybe Wembley 98?

No badge, no Murray Gates (naming the gates after himself 😂).

Forgot there was extra car parking in the North West corner. Actually I can't remember it at all.

Maybe they could cantilever the back of the SS to give more capacity. Or the could utilise the space between the turnstiles and the road, over three floors(?) to give us some cracking lounges and spaces for non-matchday drinking! This would allow loads more seats.
I think they should also make the whole South stand and the SEC and SWC into safe standing areas and sell the SC's cheap. They could also reduce the width of the seats to the legal minimum, which would add several thou to the capacity.
Family area will need to be moved, maybe to the Lower East.
The East stand is obviously going to be the main hospitality area, and maybe the cameras and media could go there too.
Away fans could get the lower North, and be herded out of the tunnel after full time. 76 yards would become away/tourist hospitality, which is a coming thing now.

A lot of people are going to moan about losing the seat they have had for years, but this is a business as well as a football club, and our future progress a=is going to depend on maximising our assets.
