Greek Island Holiday Help

No but I Just looked it up, We’re a 15 min walk away from it (already half way up the hill) Yeah we’ll give it a pop, cheers 👍
Careful on the walk with the heat, it was just up the hill from our hotel not very far at all distance wise. Hotel reception strongly recommended they order us a cheap taxi and I was very glad we took them up on it . Gets steeper the higher you get. No bother though, enjoy. I could’ve sat there all night tbh, wish we’d gone earlier to maximise the daylight. Looked good at night as well like.

Taxi it is then  cheers for the heads up 👍

Oh wise SMB, we have decided, heatwave and dead TV presenters notwithstanding, that we will be going to visit a Greek island this Summer, but having never been before we have no real idea as to where to go.

The main criteria are that it has to be picturesque, near the water and have plenty of decent tavernas / restaurants where we can sit preferably by a lovely harbour or somesuch and relax with nice local seafood etc. But no thumping house beats from local bars, no cheesy cafes advertising a full bloody english for 5 euros, don't want it to be too built up, and so on. Think Malcesine on Lake Garda but shifted to Greece. Any ideas based on good experiences, anyone?
Santorini is very nice.

Military airport ( at least it was when we were there) and the few crashed carcasses of planes dotted around the runways were a bit disconcerting.

Other that that……….lovely.

Oh we chucked this Greek bloke in the pool for not cheering when we scored.

Probably best not to mention that.

I found it a bit boring , very nice in a night if staying in Oia or Fira but no beaches there , rest of island nowt special and black volcanic beaches where water goes very deep very fast
Much prefer other Greek islands

Back to Corfuey in a cple of weeks. We've been there more than any of the other islands, keeps drawing us back in. Our usual M.O. is a few days of scootering around the island, finding new places and revisiting old. We,ll find somewhere and think, "this would be a cool place to stay", and book somewhere there for our next visit. Always book somewhere small, family run, and book direct with owners, never had a bad experience. Staying in Agios Gordios this time for the second time great little place with a fantastic beach, pretty quiet and not much going on late on but perfect for us.

Off to Chania in Crete next week . Any recommendations? missing the Brentford home game so will be looing for a of a bar that might have the match on ?

I had a nice time there. Been to Crete and Rhodes too and liked them also.

Last month, we went to Kardamena in Kos which was better than expected. Loads of nice restaurants along the main waterfront and the streets just off it. Found two great bars; the Stone roses bar which looks great (nowt to do with the one in York) and one called the Bands. 4 euros a pint. Would go back next week if possible. Off to Lassi in Kefalonia again in a few weeks so hopefully it hasn't been affected by the fires near Argostoli.

Was really nice in evening wandering round all the side streets in the old town
There are some fish that bite you when in sea … honest 😆… lovely small town

Changed a lot for the best. Some nice craft ale bars as well.

Hope nobody is being affected by the fires

We've landed in Zante today and it appears to be much less awful than yesterday

However another warnings gone out to evacuate areas near the fires
I'm in Laganas. I woke up to an emergency alert about the fires on my phone the other morning, I nearly shit myself. It was all in Greek apart from the last sentence.
The fires seem to have stopped now.
I spent yesterday round the pool watching firefighting helicopters and these weird little sea planes bombing about. We’re miles away from the fires like (Argasi) only saw one whirlybird this morning so I’m assuming they’re on top of it or operating from somewhere else that doesn’t pass us.
Your day sounds a bit like mine was, we can see the mountains that were on fire from round our pool.

We got off the plane lunch time yesterday and it was a bit of a ooh blimey that's a lot closer than I imagined

The staff in our apartments didn't seem too concerned that it would reach Laganas, that same morning we had a power cut and our whole street was out. I was flapping a bit as we don't have much cash and the ATMs were off, but I walked to the strip and the power was on there.
Then yesterday there was a fire that seemed much closer, as if it was only behind some apartments and not in the mountains. The air stunk and ash was falling round the pool.
We woke up this morning and fortunately the air was clear.

Can you put bog roll down the toilet now or do you still have to hoy it in the bins?

Not been to Greece for some time but this was the case when I last went.

Great place, recommend for what ? Old Town and harbour is class for knocking about and eat and drink if a little pricey . Not sure on the game but it's a big place . Getting out and about there's some great areas not far away . Boat trip to Balos beach is a good one.
