Just watched a five minute YouTube video

He’s got an absolute wand of a left foot on him. Some of his passes are unreal

Absolutely loves a tackle and taking the man. The fans will love it but so might the ref 😂
His passing is f***ing silly for a centre back 😳
I've just had a look and you're right like he can't half switch a ball and looks to have decent close control for a CB.

Sure it was said he was just a big brick wall type and shite at whatever else, passing stats bad etc. Unless it was someone else like.

We know our shit mate that cannot be denied

nah, thats all in the data too, but not what I was focused on. I was talking about his passing only. And as I said, doesn't mean he can't pass the ball, just that he obviously was not playing in a team where they pass back and forth between CBs trying to play out from the back. That doesn't mean he can't beat a man, and his progressive carries and successful take ons are very good. He is clearly good with the ball at his feet, and the data shows that. But for sure he was being asked to play long and progressive passes way more often than not.

But I absolutely agree that context matters, and looking at purely data is a fools game, but so is looking at purely highlights.

Take a look at the full dataset available on fbref though, a lot of people might only see what they put on the first page, when you look at the complete scouting report you get so much more interesting data, especially for Possession, like Tackled During Take-on Percentage, Miscontrols, Dispossessed etc.

And when you look at the full range of Passing stats you'll see what I mean regarding how few passes he makes, and the types of passes. It's very interesting

I've recently started looking at the data on there and yes the full data because of the over emphasis and use of it on here as being absolute. Often its used without context, being selective leaving out some of the more negative data or maybe not using it fully.

In this instance you've made that interpretation on his passing data that he's instructed to go long more often than not and that Getafe don't play out or between the centre backs. Whilst the latter is probably true to a degree per 90 he's attempting 7.12 short passes, 14.06 medium and 11.09 long. If you look at all their defensive players it's pretty much replicated that they play more medium passes, though as you would expect the fullbacks, likely being used more are getting close to medium with short passes.

His success rate of long passes being high as a percentile compared to his peers is likely what's confused the issue, but he's attempted and been successful with more medium passes and his short pass success is higher than long too. His long pass attempted/ accuracy is simply higher than his peers.

In essence this could be instructions, it could be because he has a good mid to long range pass with his left foot ir they might have a blistering right winger. I guess I'm just trying to highlight how daft some of this is without watching the team and players around him.
