Retirement

Been retired a couple of months. I hate it, bored senseless. just applied for a full time job.
Know exactly how you feel..i've been retired 4 years and i hate it..i'm a carer for my mother so i can't go back to work..i play golf..go out on my bike..go walking..i'm just bored out of my nut..i miss the day to day contact with everyone..had a couple of part time jobs but they were shite..i know it might come across as a bit ungrateful being able to retire early and not appreciating it but it's just boring.

that's what worries me tbh. i love tinkering with the motorbikes and pottering about but there's only so much you can do.
it scares the life out of me getting bored. i think it's just as important keeping the mind as well as the body active. my mam had dementia and i'm sure it was brought on more rapidly due to pretty much having a lack of social interaction after her friends passed away one by one.
i have a bit of a db pension from where we both worked, paid in for about 10 years and it's going to be half decent when i decide to stop as well as a couple of other small dc ones that aren't worth much, about 60k in total. with the state pension i should be ok though to get by. a good mate of mine who worked at the same place had a massive pot and a great pension, he went back after he retired and passed away shortly after, you'll probably know who i'm on about.
anyway, apologies for digressing. look after your mam mate.

Have a good think about it before you take the plunge..i know who you mean who went back..i've been back since i retired but i don't think i'll go back again..thing is..i get up about 8 or 9..i've got 13-14 hours to kill every day..the winter is worse anarl with the short days..the summer days are better when you can get out and about but sometimes they're long days..i just can't sit about..got to keep my mind busy..aye mate me Mam is my priority.

Have you considered any volunteering?

For me i cant wait but wouldnt dismiss the posters who say they are bored etc each to their own.
Made my first steps today probs a bit late but have sorted putting a shit load of my salary into my current open pension. Still trying to get my head round reducing my monthly salary by a canny bit but tax wise the advice seems to be i should have done it a while ago.

On the other side of the coin i know lads who absolutely love their retirement..they say there's not enough hours in the day to do what they want..it's funny because whenever i ask people what they do all day to keep occupied the only answer i ever get is 'oh you know..this and that'..you've got 14 hours to kill every day..some days are torture.

For me the hardest decision is knowing how much is enough.

I work with some very high earners who are working well into their 60s. They could easily afford to retire as they must have net worths of a few million but they are the sort of people who have done well in their careers because they are very driven and can't imagine not working. I am definitely not one of those but I also don't want to get out too early and spend the next 30 years penny pinching.
I keep thinking that. I don’t think I’ll be able to retire before 58 (10 years away) and then that is when the big decisions will come. I had thought about just stepping back and doing something less stressful like be a basic PC tech at the local uni. I just happened to see a post advertised the other day and the salary was not that high. Half it, and I was looking thinking 3.5 months on my current salary would be the same as a year on that.

I think I’m going to end up with that feeling of just one more year to be sure, vs get out now and enjoy life while I can.

I know I could easily keep myself occupied with various projects for many months if I finished now. I can’t imaging that drying up when I’m older.

the world will likely be a waterless post-apocalyptic wilderness by the time you’re 58 - put some money in the pension on the off chance that doesn’t happen and put it out of your mind for a while, but don’t forget to enjoy yourself in the meantime

I suppose it depends on age and fitness and health. I would love to just go out for walks and a coffee with no rush to get back. I would be going out places, although probs be a bit different in winter but just to do whatever i want even if it was nothing sounds like heaven to me 😁
Go to the gym during the day instead of going 7pm at night and having tea about half 8. I work away quite a lot and when weekends come just dont seem to have time to do anything.

wrap in working away as soon as you can; it’s an absolute killer, did it for 20 years and life is too short

That what you've just posted..i can go for a walk..about 6 miles...go out on my bike..10 miles..go to the gym..hour and a half..and it's still only 3 in the afternoon..7-8 hours before i go to bed..they can be long days to fill in.

Ha similar routine to me and I love it 👍
I over 2 n 1/2 years retired now.
Got a daily routine starts with leisurely 2 hour ish in gym, swim, sauna/steam,
nice bit breccy catch up with news.
Then a nice 5 mile country walk with dog bit lunch maybe a Granda nap.
Then Tackle any household jobs or maybe a bike ride or trip out into town bit mooch about couple of afternoon beers just see how it goes.
And if I ever think Im getting board of this, I cast my mind back to the days of heading back up to Aberdeen to go offshore, and I get a smug grin thinking thank god I got out of that rat race.
Enjoy while u can life too short.
Funny tho most retired people I bump into all seem to say they wish they had done it sooner.

Then if you run out, go back to work. Would you rather have some good time doing what you want when you’re well enough or have that time when your knees are buggered?

I assume you've lost contact with mates
I'd try an find some group activities ? Work was definitely day to day contact but became an observation of peoples worst qualities .
Selfishness, greed ,negativity etc . I'm OK on my own for good spells then have more positive contacts with people when I choose

Just wing it a bit ,yeah it's unknown but some people do that in the early years ,no firm future etc . If you've worked non stop take the leap. Start doing you stuff and as said you can pick it up again if need be

Coupled with 5 or 6 trips away a year n a bit golf that sounds heaven.

Same here.
Was up early this morning for 8am game of Padel in the sunshine and hearing the other players say they were off to work afterwards always reminds me of how lucky I am.
Now at home having coffee, before heading out for walk with my wife.
May go to gym this afternoon before it gets busy or watch Netflix/listen to podcast. Bit of gardening to be done also. Perfect.
