Sunderland railway station.

The one’s out the front of Newcastle are all empty now as well, apart from Cafe Nero.

Just put some better seats in and make it look a bit more interesting. Pretty shit from network rail really

Not sure it's a network rail issue as the station is managed by Northern so it's upto them the decoration, unless I've missed something.

The Durham Coast Line badly needs something like SENRUG imo who stands up for the line.

None of this stuff would be getting through them or they'd be dealing it with themselves.

I use this everyday and it's f***ing awful.

Full of fake tramps and alkys every morning. Things only been open a short while and one of the doors is already permanently broken and has been for a year now with no attempt to fix it.

You have the fake security guards ignoring anything that's happening and standing out the way.

Place is an absolute empty shell with nothing going for itm

An embarrassment tbh.
Thats exactly what I thought yesterday.

Huge chance to make a great first impression with everyone who comes to the city, but it’s now probably the worst part of the town. There’s a bunch of kids playing on bikes in the station and people just stood drinking can in Market Sq.

These people won’t come back.

If they were going to leave it empty, surely it could have been better thought out and put the money to better use in the station or on the platforms.

Was about to come on this thread just to ask if the doors are still broken.

Thanks

Looks like the poundland building is going to be knocked down

""This new northern entrance will sit in a new public square, delivering an impressive arrival point in the Central Business District of Riverside Sunderland and will be framed by the beautiful Elephant Tearooms and Mackie’s Corner that are springing back to life.”"
Is this still going to happen?

I know our MP is looking into it and is talking to network rail, trouble is he has limited powers to do anything.

All he can do is talk to them and try and find a solution, really wish the rent of the units was cut for a period of 3 months to encourage someone to move in.

Don't understand the mindset of its better to leave them empty

Our previous MP (now Baroness of Marley Potts?) claimed credit, saying she had personally campaigned for it for 12 years. What a legacy it and the whole area outside is awful.

Walked past the station on Wednesday evening, outside were a load of threatening smackheads/pissheads/people drinking bottled beer on the benches.

On Holmeside there had been some trouble, a bloke with his nose or mouth or both bust falling about and a kid further up trying to kick the bus-stop
glass in because someone had stolen his bike and hearing aid (I think).

Inside the station on Thursday tea-time and it was like a decommissioned aircraft hangar, the only other people in there were a lass in the ticket office* (very helpful) and a security guard (very friendly).

*The ticket office was dark and tiny. Outside a load of smackheads/pissheads screaming at each other.

No sign of the polis - despite a promise by successive Labour PCCs of a functioning city centre police station.

The one opposite the bookies has a 'use other door and an arrow' on a bit of cardboard (i think - didn't want to get too close to the group sitting in front of it)

It is no reflection on anyone who campaigned or called for a better station. The money was put in, the opportunity was there and has been wasted by Northern or whoever is responsible. So seems a little off to say it's Elliott's legacy.

If it wasn't good enough it shouldn't have passed the planning stage. I can remember the designs that were considered - some of them were tremendous, some were like off the shelf retail sheds - we got the latter. She took it upon herself to deliver and would say she'd had another meeting with the interested parties which she couldn't divulge at our branch meetings (so shut up!)

'Northern or whoever is responsible' have history of spending millions on the station and the end product is underwhelming - glass wall, cheap framed pictures, an escalator which never worked, under illuminated platforms...

We should have had a competent person bargainer in there.

Railway stations seem to attract wrong uns all over the country, world even, for some reason. Amount of tramps, dodgepots, beggars and god knows what else outside and around Newcastle Central is noticeable every time. Difference compared to ours though is it’s diluted by normal people travelling through, and obviously it’s a big grand old building (albeit a bit scruffy these days). I haven’t used the new station yet but sounds like it’s been a waste of money so far. Still hope the north entrance can be redeveloped and into something really impressive.

The design is absolutely fine , that's not the issue with what happened.

Northern showed a photo preview with loads of seats, plants , artworks , and full units.

None of these have happened and this is all down to who runs the station.
Is this still going to happen?
Yes but the funding is miles off, unlike the other entrance, Northern don't own the building and area and that's the council that will ultimately have to fund.it

We were mugged then!

Problem is you can't compel companies to occupy units, presumably have to have the footfall and the customers to spend in the units to make it viable.
May get nationwide shite like a mcdonalds or some other guff taking units, but its a big risk for little local independents financially so can see why they haven't been snapped up

Definitely no to a McDonald's, Burger King, dixie chicken or any fast food outlet. The previous station at time reaked of the ventilation from Burger King. In fact loads called the railway station, Burger Kings basement as that all it was. Should be barriers to stop the tramps and smackheads hanging about, no valid ticket, off you go.

Saw those guards yesterday and they were doing their best to look intimidating while barely fitting through the train doors.

Unfortunately there's only shite fast food places that will have the resources to take a punt without much risk.

Would you plough your savings into a unit in the station? Because it seems apparent its not an attractive option for anyone atm

This is what they do. Then if someone is causing a nuisance they disappear completely. They aren't really fit for purpose but then I guess they have very little power to do anything either so might not be there fault entirely.
