England v India 4th Test. 23rd July, Emirates Old Trafford

TheRey

Striker
Since I have a 100% record, I wanted to get in before the Bot.

Bashir out for the Series, Dawson (correctly) called in as a replacement. A bit surprised- id assumed they would have taken the opportunity to give Bethell a game.

Big decisions to make with the bowlers. Atkinson was firing rockets in club cricket the other day. Archer bowled beautifully - do we risk him in back to back Tests given we have an 8 day break? Does Woakes deserve to stay in the side?

So anyway, for me from the selected squad-

Creepy
Duckett
Pope
Root
Brook
Stokes
Smith
Dawson
Atkinson
Carse
Archer

Wonder if India will rest Bumrah for this one, too?

Top 3 very lucky to be included

Was genuinely surprised to see a recent post flagging how often India lose when Bumrah is in the team. Hopefully he is selected.

I think the only change will be the replacement for Bashir.

Can't say ive seen anything in Cox to suggest hes international standard tbh
I wouldn't write him off on that white ball series in the Windies. That was a joke of a series shouldn't have taken place.

He'd have played 3 tests if not for injury so he's clearly rated and I'd be shocked if he's not in the touring party for the Ashes.

Glad to see Atkinson back. All of a sudden our attack looks a lot better with him and Archer fit.

I’d drop Woakes for Atkinson and retain Archer and Carse.

England picking the sensible option in Dawson (still need to play him though).

I'd be wrapping Archer in cotton wool mind, extraordinary that he bowled so quick and so many overs over 4 days. Do we really risk him back to back?

Bethell
Duckett
Pope (honestly a toss up between him or Crawley getting dropped as I liked what Bethell did at 3)
Root
Brook
Stokes
Smith
Dawson
Woakes (if Archer was fully fit and had games behind him, Woakes' career would be over, but I'd go Woakes over Tongue right now)
Atkinson
Carse
Wouldn’t pick Archer personally. Would give him a break before the Oval.

Need to protect him and he bowled >40 overs

Duckett isn’t lucky at all.
This
Crazy how fortunate Crawley and Pope are to still be guaranteed a game.
If they drop Crawley and Bethell performs and Pope still underperformed, then Cox or an Opener could get a shot.

As for the 5th test, Archer, Atkinson, Wood/Carse, Stokes, Dawson.
Canny attack that

Good job. There's a longer gap between the last test and this one.

Gives the bowlers a better chance to recover.

As ever it's whether there are replacements who are likely to do better. I'd retain Pope as I think he is improving as a 3.
Both Cook and Vaughan commented that Crawley looked shot to pieces. They've got about 200 caps between them but that observation still probably won't be accepted by some on here. I'd rest him and hope finishing the season with Kent will help restore his confidence. He's going to Australia regardless.
Probably be good experience for Smith to open -cannot do any harm.
So Bethell, Atkinson and Dawson replacing Crawley, Woakes and Bashir.

Duckett
Smith
Pope
Root
Brooks
Bethell
Stokes
Dawson
Atkinson
Carse
Archer.

That's a very strong batting line up.

There is a 9 day ago between the 3rd and 4th test and a 4 day gap between the 4th and 5th
