I was certainly in the 'get Foakes in' camp as the alternatives weren't that much better with the bat.

Smith's batting is on another level though. He could play as a specialist batter easily. A genuine all rounder which adds so much balance to the team. FEC?

I do think Smith could play up the side though

His technique is superior to Crawley and I’ve never been convinced with pope , who gets out to softly and in a repeated way

You could play smith above stokes as it stands
 
I’m going to be honest I don’t understand the calls to take the gloves away from Smith. Did the Aussies ever think about doing that with Gilchrist?

The lad is perfect at number 7 with the gloves. Maybe you could put him at 6 with another all rounder below, but I wouldn’t be having him any higher.

We saw recently that he runs out of partners. He averages 90 in the second innings

Pope needs to back up some scores.
Bashir is being for his test future.
Archer needs to bowl well and prove his fitness.
Stokes and Carse need to stay fit.

:lol: That is exactly how it would be if this was the 90s

This current set up means only injury gets a batsman dropped

Be interesting to see if Jofra comes out of this test well and pairing him with Atkinson in the next

But where does he bat? It’s not going to be 4 or 5 and it’s a risk playing him at 3 as he’s never batted there before in first class cricket.

So even if he bats say 6 ahead of Stokes he may as well keep the gloves.


That’s such a poor shot. Just a waft with no foot movement.
