It would have been nice if he had got some coaching qualifications under his belt. then we could look at him in a player coach role. As a player at the end of his career would be ln a limited role within the team.

Signing older players on a free on shorter-term contracts is absolutely part of the 'model'. Reinildo & Browne, for example.
Add onto this that it's a complete no brainer of a transfer (as expanded on extensively in this thread) then why the fuck shouldn't it happen?
The potential of doing his badges here, for my fantasy brain, would be for his benefit. I'd not have thought of a coaching role for him here. Mind, he might not even want to do them.
