South Africa in Zimbabwe

I can only assume he would be embarassed to break it?

Given the match situation, he could have easily batted for another hour. I can’t imagine they’re going to lose a lot of overs through rain over the next few days

It’s the message it’s sends mate more than anything.

It gives him totally justification for the rest of his captaincy career to declare when he thinks right for the team irrespective of a score of a team mate
I mean he might never captain South Africa again

I don't get the logic, South Africa cricket riding high off the WTC Final win. A country that isn't gripped by Test Cricket like it used to be.

Getting the headline grabbing Lara record finally broken. Would have been a massive thing for South African Cricket.

Probably still win the game within 4 days regardless of whether he'd batted on for another 30 mins and potentially got there.

Possibly, but now for the rest of career at whatever level he can say he put the team before himself and declare when he thinks right for the team without having to wait for a personal milestone to be reached
Added to the post. I just don't get it.

All the Saffers on the other forum I post on too don't get it.

Meh. He was well within his rights to go for it.

It doesn’t help the team at all
Of course he was, but he clearly wanted to send a message, the right one imo.

For me at least it’s not about this game as he could have scored 600 and still won the game easily as playing sub standard opppostion.

It’s about a message that it sends thsy personal milestones are not important in a team game and that going forward that comes first.

It’s a principle which you may see that I strongly agree with

I think he might regret that decision in years to come.

You may only get one chance to break the record. There was plenty of time left in the game he should have gone for it.

Yeah think that's my take on it.

Im assuming he just didn't feel right breaking the record in that game. Only thing that makes sense.

Didn't bother Matthew Hayden when he briefly held the record for hitting 380 against Zimbabwe.

Looks like the match is only going to last three days.

Who knows. Only he can say. Im assuming it was a total they would normally declare at and just playing it as any other game. I would just score what you can in the time you would usually bat

It was at the start of day two against a really weak bowling attack. The benefit to the team was negligible.

It’s more the message it gives out that he is putting his personal achievement second and the fact for the rest of his career as a captain for any team he will now have total justification to declare when he thinks it right for the team even if a player in the 90s.

I agree in this particular match would not have made much difference if any

But think it’s admirable to do and I respect him for it.

Pleased he declared, the record would be diminished if set against Zimbabwe.

Can't believe he actually did though!

He’s been interviewed and said “ Brian Lara keeping that record is exactly the way it should be”

Fair enough. Rather you than me 😂😂

Edited my post as just seen the full quote.

I think that's absolutely pathetic from the coach tbh and poor mentality from the individual.

"I thought we had enough and we need to bowl. Secondly, Brian Lara is a legend let's be real. He got 401, or whatever it was, against England

For someone of that stature to keep that record is pretty special. I think if I get the chance again, I would probably do the same thing

Speaking to Shuks, he kinda said to me as well: 'Listen, let the legends keep the really big scores'

I agree like. Ridiculous really

When he retired literally nobody will remember who he was if he’d broke that record he’d have been talked about forever.

No time for sentiment
