It was the most perfectly placed shot I think I’ve ever seen and Watson brilliantly used their player as a screen and took it incredibly early. Better keepers than Cooper would have been caught out. That said if he was three inches taller with correspondingly longer arms he might have just flicked it on to the post.

I was talking to a coach at a PL academy recently and he had an interesting take on the Watson goal.

Although he agrees it was a perfectly placed shot. He reckoned that Tommys poor second touch basically made the goal as (i) the defenders were knackered and just couldn’t react in time (ii) it allowed him to hide the shot, so the goalie couldn’t see it.

Sometimes the ability to react to a situation that hasn't gone to plan is just as important as if everything has.

Also how much better would we have done if mundle and Watson had been fit all year and one or the other coming on late

Yes. The more I watch it back, the more I think the defenders could have smothered he ball before he gets to it, had they been more alert/less tired

You need to be exceptional to be a premier league goalkeeper at that height! Would a 6.4-6.5 keeper save that or tip it onto the post? Possibly imo!
If they were flexible enough. Pantillimon was huge 6 ft 7 iirc but his main weakness was getting down into corners quickly iirc height is great but nit on its own.

Also down to 10 men, there would have been another body in there somewhere to get round had Wilder just subbed the injured player when he went off with a head injury! He clearly thought the game was going to extra time and was clinging onto the hope his best defender could come back on for it! 😂

Pantillmon would have gathered that into his chest 😂😂

Exactly how I seen it. Wasn’t the best touch but adapted to the situation perfectly.

It seems that goalkeeping is easy if you know where the ball is going before the player strikes it, otherwise there's a huge range of possibilities to cover. People seem to underestimate just what a demanding job it is.

The CB (I think Souza dropping in) is only about 2 yards from where Watson strikes it when he takes his penultimate touch. If he’d been a bit sharper im sure he’d have swept it up

And (iii) Roberts had already pulled 3 of their players out of position to create the space for him

Sheff Utd were knackered at the end of the first half from watching them.. They tried to keep it tight but we moved them all over the place. They were from 60minutes in relying on breakaways thankfully none came off save for Patto. By the time Mayenda scored they were all over the place. Robinson was struggling like hell and then O'Hare's ball out to was hit and hope. Fortunately Moore got in the way with his poor first touch.

I remember thinking the marking was shit for Mayenda’s. Both he and Roberts completely lost their men and the midfield disappeared.

Obviously I have watched the goal a lot of times and another thing I noticed was that three players had to be around Roberts before the ball is played to Moore. One of them tries desperately to get a tackle in on Watson after being out of position to help his teammates stop Roberts. That split second allows Watson to get his shot away.

Back to thread hopefully we get this lad.

The one thing I was taught as a defender was never to run backwards to defend facing your own goal. Paddy's ball, people will appreciate given time, was a Worldy. infact, the three touches prior to that were top draw. Robinson just didn't know where he was to be fair when Paddy slipped that ball to Mayenda behind him

My Chelsea supporting BIL said he was a canny keeper but shite under the high ball and couldn’t kick it.

Sharper or fitter, but agreed, he seems to take an age to come to the slightly overhit touch

Robinson is absolutely dogshit like.
