F1: The Movie

Saw this last night at the Omniplex. If I wanted to pick holes in the driving and racing sequences we'd be here all day, but I just switched my F1 fan brain off and sat back and enjoyed it for the cheesy, high octane nonsense that it is.

I think the best compliment is that both me (F1 nerd) and my partner (doesn't know a damn thing about F1) both came out having enjoyed it equally.

(Side note - went to see it in the new 'Maxx' screen in the Omniplex. Seriously impressed with the revamp they've given the place so far!!)
 

Clue (1985)

Tim Curry expertly leads this film version of the popular board game. I understand it’s a bit of a cult film (high concept + mid film w/character actors usual equates to this) and while it’s harmless fun, I’m not sure it’s worthy of thinking about in any great detail.

Interestingly, you could watch each ending separately at cinemas when it was released, different to its current format where they travel through the different endings.

It’s Edgar Wallace time again…

Candidate for Murder (1962)

Michael Gough (Alfred in the 80s/90s Batman films) is a clearly-unhinged husband who takes out a contract on his cheating wife.

Strange little entry, this one. The story takes a few turns that aren’t fully explained, but they do make sense when you consider the nuances of the character. Gough is more restrained than usual.

Love the Jane Wiedlin cameo, always enjoyed the supidity of Clue, Murder By Death is a better watch on similar-ish themes.

Once you know the funniest bit, you tend to just let it run thinking “hurry up funny bit”. But then when it arrives, it’s not half as funny as you remember 🤣
 
Fight or Flight, a Josh Hartnett film from 2024, pretty good. Clearly not to be taken seriously, but a disgraced FBI agent boards a plane to escort an assasin home and chaos ensues. Well done and entertaining 6/10
 
Jurassic World Rebirth
Some superb set pieces, plenty of nods to other monster movies and shots "borrowed" from the original JP, just nothing to really hold it all together.
The original JP is one of my all time favourite films, this is entertaining but doesn't come close.

Sad how boring these have become.

The Exorcist III [1990] 5/10
Some decent scenes and a canny script but not remotely scary.

The Accidental Tourist [1988] 6/10
Incredibly disjointed. It felt like they filmed the ENTIRE book and then didn't have a clue how to bring it together in the edit.

It’s a good point, that. The original film was, for me, one of those seminal moments in cinema. Where the level of visual sophistication on show felt revolutionary compared to older dinosaur films.

Everything about the film felt holistic. The design of the setting and the solidity of the concept made it feel like it was a lavish, real place, that was both recognisable and possible, yet also alien and fantastic. Even down to the branded gear in the film, and the explanatory animation, everything felt cohesive and remarkable. A fully-realised actual place, where the incredible effects felt real. It managed all of this while only having about 15 minutes of dinosaur action.

Those effects mostly still look great today. It’s a tremendous film, and a real landmark in modern cinema.
 
The Mrs chose to watch Total Recall (1990) version. She loved it and to be fair I enjoyed it again 7/10

We followed that with Ice Road starring Liam Neeson as she loved Ice road truckers

Standard neeson fayre which again she loved whilst I lost the will to stay awake

Her 8/10. Me 5/10
 
Predator: Killer of Killers - You kind of have to have some history with the Predator franchise to like this, also not mind animation. You could still watch it stand alone and think, yeah that was alright. It dabbles with something I always thought would be interesting, even before Prey came out, Predators dropped on earth from the dawn of time, going toe to toe with historical badarses. 7/10 (Soft spot for anything Predator related).

Does have the one scary bit mind, the jump scare!
