The Ugly Stepsister.

This Norwegian film is billed as a Body Horror and that’s doing it a huge disservice tbh. It’s more a comedy period drama with two slightly uncomfortable moments.

If you don’t mind reading the old subtitles and don’t mind seeing Willies on the screen there’s a ton of fun to be had. Elvira, the main lass is superb.

The History Boys (2006) 8/10
Alan Bennett play transposed to the screen. Launched several careers. Not sure the sympathetic portrayal of the Richard Griffiths character has aged well - well all's said and done, he was a paedophile.

I saw this at a preview screening years ago: I hated it and this was long before hating Corden was a thing!

Review of the forthcoming Criterion release of Sorcerer.

**Alert** Sorcerer is a very good movie and often overlooked. Roy Schneider is great in this. It’s about four outcasts (some owing a lot of money) who move from different continents to South America to live and work and more importantly escape their old life. All four men are in desperate need of money and get a job transporting dynamite on treacherous roads. Great ending with music by tangerine dream.
Thief (1981) James Caan the lead as a safe cracker who gets in with mob. Michael Mann’s first feature film. A lot like Heat visually and style wise. Also very violent as it progresses. Caan is brilliant and very believable as an ex-con out to set up a family and leave the criminal world behind. Robert Prosky plays the Chicago mob boss using him to steal diamonds. Great score by electro band Tangerine Dream.

9/10.
Incredible film. Robert prosky who normally plays a kindly man goes against type as a mobster and is chilling. “Your kid’s mine, you got him on loan, he is leased you are renting him. I will whack out your whole family ” scary. James caan in one of his best roles.
Many of you like the same films as myself

Aye he absolutely changes. Quite chummy for a mob boss at first then he just crushes him. Great last half hour.

Watched 28 years last night - Brilliant, under two hours, some jump scares, some poigniant emotional scenes, some great jokes and some surprise membes not in the trailers, I cried I laughed I was scared 9.5/10. I was expecting a disapointed 6.5/10 which is normally what happens when I watch something I'm looking forward to. Better then the first one..

The Equalizer 3 (2023)

Quite a sedate vigilante film, punctuated by some creative bloodletting. It follows the classic setup and tropes: hero’s people are threatened, arseholes are hunted.

It doesn’t really do much new, but it handles the action sequences well. I can’t work out if I found Denzil cool and menacing, or disinterested and nonchalant. The level of contempt drummed up for the benefit of the audience towards the Mafia boys is pretty well done. It’s all predictable, but cathartically entertaining in that way that vigilante films are.

7/10

Great news about Denis Villeneuve. He's one of the best directors around at the moment and has shown he is faithful to the source material.
Hopefully they move away from the melodramatic rubbish of the last Craig film.

Awesome choice of director for Bond and he’s saying all the right things about honouring the tradition, if they get the casting of Bond right very excited!

More interesting news today, Aaron Sorkin is writing and directing a follow up to Fincher’s The Social Network. Not sure how I feel about this one…

This comment on Reddit did make me laugh though:

“Aaron Sorkin is too good a writer to be working with Aaron Sorkin the director”
