Aye, good call that. He rode his luck. But fair play to him. Shame about his ton but personal milestones apart, we needed that knock. He's gonna be out soon like.

I agree but just wait until one of them is out playing an aggressive shotToo effort from these two.
Not good against the short ballThat's the thing about Woakes' batting, he's generally plays it on the ground.
This isn’t true. Most people understand most of the dismissals. These guys are playing positively but with intelligence. Woakes was on 1 for ages then upped the ante.I agree but just wait until one of them is out playing an aggressive shot
It’s also the finest of fine lines between a quality pull shot and one the you slightly mistime. It doesn’t have to be idiocy every time a player is out playing an aggressive shot.
Of course it has I agree and what it does it gives us a better chance of winning test matches. At times I’ve been critical of the approach, but I fully accept that we were lost as a team before this approach came in. I feel more he didn’t go through the shot full blooded this time, which is frustrating.
We can’t say its not entertaining though we are going along at 4.7 here after 91 overs and we are more than in the game. This team has made test cricket a better watch over the last 3 years
Are they still massive favouritesAnother gift.
25-0 doesn’t move you from massive favourites to odds against![]()
Good points. I will defend Smith though - he was trying to get as many runs before the new ball as he could. For me it was totally in keeping with trying to eat into the deficit as quickly as possible. Got to take the rough with the smooth with this approach - an argument that I know is hated on here!I'd like to see some evolution of this approach though.
It's excellent but lacks pragmatism that you also need in test cricket.
How does Smith shot selection make any sense. Not a single person can defend that.
It's more nuanced then plenty are making it. Everyone is pretty binary on it which is frustrating.
Seems to be two camps that just go well you can't complain they get out cos they play all the great shots.
Then you have the camp they are morons everytime they get out to a bad shot.

As much as I see your point, getting that perfect balance almost impossible.I'd like to see some evolution of this approach though.
