Jordan Henderson (signed for Brentford)

I'd like to see him back. I think his leadership and experience will be vital to a young team. Also, he doesn't have to be a replacement for Neil, as Neil could move forward with Jobe leaving (probably). A midfield 3 of Hendo (defensive), Neil, Le Fee could work.
We may end up playing more of a “double pivot” (apologies to those who don’t like modern tactical language) and Neil plus Hendo could work here too

"Henderson is a professional, the non-commissioned officer maintaining discipline and morale, ensuring the plan is followed and standards maintained. He has captained a team that won the league and the Champions League. During the Covid lockdown, he emerged as a de facto spokesperson for the players. He has the respect of his peers. And that is no small thing."

How do you know this?

Simplistic Hypothetical example:
Offer him parity with ELF (current top earner)
Incentive if we stay up
2 year contract
Break clause option for both if we go down

If Hendo is genuinely interested in coming back it’s not going to be about money. He could easily get paid more elsewhere.

It’s surely more about finishing at his hometown club and going somewhere he can make a real contribution. He could make a huge difference on and off the pitch and, if he’s like any other Sunderland fan, there’s a massive feel good factor about the place right now. I can totally see the appeal from his point of view…or he could sign for Fulham or Rangers etc
Good post but there was a poster on here who knows JH and he said it’s not about the money. Obviously, he is a Champions League winning captain and still involved in the England team so we have to make a sensible offer,

Neil would benefit immensely from JH

Henderson himself might see this as a positive move, especially if his long term plan is to transition into coaching and management.

It would seem that he is valued as an on and off pitch leader so he’s maybe an experienced head and leader that le Bris would benefit from who can ease into a ready-made coaching role as he puts himself through all the qualifications he needs. I don’t know how that works so no idea if it’s possible.

It probably depends on factors alongside whether his legs are gone, or not… things like his wage requirements, whether Le Bris thinks he fits tactically, where Speakman believes a more senior experience lead is needed on/off the pitch, whether Henderson wants a move back to the NE or to his extended family, his own family circumstances.

I doubt whether the moral aspect of him making a few quid in Saudi is entering anyone’s head but the supporters.

I’d pay him want it takes personally, as long as we weren’t tied in if we go down. Like you say it’s the affect he can have on the likes of Dan Neil, Chris Rigg and the whole team. And of course, he is still a VERY good footballer. He’d have to make a bit of a concession though as a newly promoted team couldn’t really expect / afford to pay his true market value.

You would hope with him coming home every one will be sensible to make it happen.

Obviously great for the club but also the city.

Quote from Tuchel when asked about why Henderson was important in the squad.

“I know I can walk away from a training session and know the standards won’t drop at all as long as Jordan is there”

Surely the coaches have that responsibility. I think it’s just rhetoric from Tuchel.

surely his financial demands wont be too extreme , he`s a wealthy man now and if he does love the club he should accept a low basic salary topped up with appearance bonuses

Every manager rates his leadership skills and to have a chance of surviving we’re going to need a couple of experienced pros. Bit of a no brainer really so long as his wages aren’t mental.
