Wolves, Brentford and Burnley

Realistically no fans think their team is going to be relegated before a season start. I was reading a Southampton forum last season and they were talking about having nowhere near the worst squad in the league and relishing the chance to relegate us in the last ever match at Goodison Park.

Odd though it might sound I think we’re better equipped to step up than Leeds and Burnley as we’ve got a more balanced style of play and, imo, a better coach. Also have a good, truly committed, young squad.
Of course we need to improve significantly but my target position would be 15th and that’s achievable with some good recruitment.

Spurs to go down quite nice at 40-1 imo.

Squad is nowhere near ready to play Champions League football in the week and there will be a circular firing squad if the new manager gets off to a bad start. Will Levy back him as well? He often doesn’t.

Great price for a speculator.
Aye. Pundits were saying all season that only the injuries are stopping them competing for CL places but the Spurs fans I know all said they’re an 8-12 team if everyone stayed fit. Their squads vastly overrated.
I’m also of the opinion that Brentford success like Brightons is very data led and not head coach/manager led. Brighton have experience of blooding new HCs into an established system, Brentford not so much.
If Palace aren’t allowed into Europe next season there may be an exit queue forming both on and off the field.
Can Wolves continue their very long new manager bounce?

To use the old bear hunt analogy we don’t have to be faster than the bear just faster than the two hunters we entered the woods with plus one who is already in there.
We’ll all be better informed come August.

I'm in something of a quandary for next season - as some of you know from previous posts, I'm a Wolves fan who's lived in the NE for 20 years now, and I started taking my lad to Sunderland games at the end of the L1 season.

We've had season cards the past three years, and did the early bird renewal for 25/26 too. This upcoming season is the first where I've got a genuine conflict of interest.

I've read this (and the other Wolves thread) with interest, but we currently have a good manager, money in the bank, and had a strong-ish finish to the season. Unlike the start of the last two seasons (Lopetegui walking out, G'ON finishing the previous season on a rotten run of form) I have no concerns about 25/26 for Wolves.

Brentford will likely lose their manager, possibly keeper, and possibly Mbeumo as well, but odds are they'll replace them well, in the same way that Brighton have continued to improve year on year.

The PL is turning into a closed shop, with the same 17 clubs entering their third year together, which means 3 more years of payments and signings than those coming up have managed. I'm working on the basis that both Leeds and Burnley have had churn, and SAFC have obviously been away since 2017.

So while I think Sunderland finishing ahead of Burnley is possible, given they built their Championship season on a miserly defence and not scoring goals, I think it's a tall order to catch Brentford. Which means even if you do finish ahead of Wolves (& Burnley), you need to overhaul at least one other team. Leeds the more obvious shout but they've had an additional couple of weeks of PL planning given they didn't take the playoff route.

Come back and bump this post in 12 months' time but it wouldn't be any major surprise if the three who come up this season, are the three who go down next, again.
Closer shop is the perfect description, the gap has never been bigger and any of the 3 promoted teams will have had an unbelievable season if they manage to stay up…..it’ll be an achievement to take it deep into the season

And what do you think of our chances? How do you think we will do against not just yourselves but clubs like Wolves and Crystal Palace? As an Everton fan. Do you think we will shock one or two and actually play well and compete against these massive clubs? Every team we go up against they are going to be bigger and better than us. As newbies to the PL I believe the only teams I am looking for us to beat and be better than are Leeds United and Burnley. If we are to stay up however we have to be better than one other, but the caveat is that one other is from some very exceptional clubs with very talented and skilful players. But I cannot think of one other.

Yes but take Franks out and I think there’s a real possibility it will start to unravel.

It may, but I reckon it’ll take more than 1 season for them to drop out. I’m sure they’ll bring in another decent coach and they’re gonna have a decent transfer kitty.

Not saying you, but there’s a tinge of arrogance in some of the comments on this thread. We’ve got a lot of ground to make up just to be level with Leeds.

Of course we can stay up ( right now I would say we won’t) but some people are in for a huge huge shock next season. Worst bit is they will almost certainly be kicking off when we are struggling, wanting the manager sacked , the players getting rid of, wanting Speakman out and ripping up everything we have set up. When really we should just suck up whatever comes and know we are moving closer to the goal of being a secure premier league club no matter what happens

Leeds are miles better than us at present.

Palace didn't change manager, it was a slow start to the season due to players away at international tournaments.

I ask the same of you as a Palace' fan. You have players we simply dream of. I couldn't name one single Palace player (I doubt you could name a single Sunderland player) and I don't even know the name of your manager - we have been away from the Premier League for so long, 8 years IIRC in EFL (League One & Championship) I don't know anything about it anymore. I have never watched it from the moment we were relegated. But what I do know is your squad will no doubt be packed full of world-class players bought for several million. Based on that what do you think our chances are against your lot?

People are honestly underestimating how difficult next season is going to be.
I do …. 1. We must nail it on the transfer market this summer 2. We will have a small core group of PL quality who must not get injured 3. The ball bounces perfectly throughout the season get 35-40 points to stay up.

10 wins is the magic number
