Boro thread

Must admit, I've never bothered to look into it and can't remember. Was there ever actually an organised boycott? Like did fans groups/ fanzines etc get together and ask fans to stop turning up? If so, then fair enough, it's a boycott. If there was nothing organised then there's no chance 10,000 randomly all decided to boycott purely against the ownership.

If its just a load of people stopped turning up then wheres the evidence it was a boycott rather than people just getting sick of being shit? I hear our league one crowds mentioned, but no one says the people who stopped attending then were boycotting, even though we'd have had much more reason to do so than the mags ever had.

Genuinely, if fans groups were calling for an organised boycott and attendances dropped off as a direct result then I'll say fair enough. If not, if attendances just tailed off naturally, then they stopped going because they were bored of being shit and, when they suddenly wanted to come back because they had blood money, the "we were boycotting" was an easy excuse to try and make themselves feel better about being glory seekers who abandoned their club
They had their shouting at shops which will have had a degree of organisation and sure people claimed in fanzines they werent going as boycotting against ashley.

They stopped going in the same way some of our lot stopped going because they didn't like Stuart donald, with us it's shit support (that's in their eyes), with them it's a boycott. It was an.excuse to use to pack in going as they were bored of lower table finishes.

They were still getting big attendances due to the season ticket giveaway so I really don't know how that can be considered to be a boycott.

We've had 61 seasons in the top flight and 52 in the second division, so I think it's a bit disingenuous to say we are where we have mainly ever been.

At the same time, I don't think as fans of the club we have any divine right to expect Premier League football, but seeing clubs like Fulham, Brentford, Bournemouth, Palace, Wolves, Forest and Brighton establish themselves in the Premier League leaves us feeling frustrated, questioning why we can't do the same.

Sunderland and Ipswich have managed to get promoted without needing parachute payments. With the right model in place, clever recruitment and good management a club like Boro should be regarding promotion to the Premier League each season as being a realistic target.

Not a reason to now renew though is it. Would confirm your fans are very poor if your crowds are low next season.

You spent a few quid and while you didn't challenge you were safe. So why not renew?

But I agree about ownership. Gibsons heart is in the right place but all he's good for is throwing money at it, doesn't seem to have a football brain

I think deep down he knows this himself, hence why he appointed Kieran Scott to be our head of football. He will have a big say on player recruitment and the manager of course, but there is still a belief that ultimately Gibson always has the final say, which might be the problem.

Some believe that Scott wanted us to appoint Rob Edwards as manager when our form dipped but Gibson wasn't having it.

A rich owner who’s happy to throw money at the club but doesn’t have a football brain and relies on others at the club to spend his money “wisely”. But ultimately come up short.

Where have we seen this story before?

Tbf I agree with not getting Edwards as you don't have the players to play his brand.

I hate it when clubs just appoint any manager not thinking of the players they already have. We were very guilty of it under short, Bruce and Poyet are polar opposites

Always thought you were a rational poster, but haway man, no Sunderland fans post on your website. Does that not tell you something? Yes I love the extra passion of our match, but the only reason this thread keeps going is exactly what I’m doing now, responding to another Smoggie. I like to hear your crack, but don’t claim this thread keeps going cos we care. It goes on because of a dozen Boro supporters constantly keep posting

There's 4 off the top of my head (incoming joke).

Admittedly there's more Boro that post on here compared to Sunderland fans who post on our board but regarding this thread, a Boro fan posted to say congratulations and good luck for next season. Many had digs in return and took the piss, which I totally get, as you've just been promoted and it's been back and forth throughout this thread, Boro and Sunderland posters winding each other up throughout the season. Let's not pretend it's all been one way though.

Maybe not all one way, but it’s a question of scale. There is very low frequency of posts on your website. Dare say one thread on this website, can have more activity compared to a full day across the whole of FMTTM.
